View Full Version : SVT clutch disc only, stock plate and TOB?

ok, so i've already been told i *should* replace all three at the same time, but i'm broke. i had a mechanic look at flywheel, clutch disc, and pressure plate. he said they all looked fine except the springs on the clutch disc were a little loose. it was on those grounds that he recommended i just replace the disc and call it a day.
so, what i *should* do aside, will an SVT clutch disc be compatible with stock flywheel and pressure plate? or since i'm only replacing the disc, should i go with non-SVT? would replacing the disc with SVT yeild any performance increase worth the hassle it will be for me to get my hands on one? (not money, since the SVT disc costs less than the non-SVT)

you don't have to get a TOB but it's highly recommended.... in the least make sure it's fully functional
as for flywheel... just get it resurfaced (30$ tops) and you'll be fine....

perfect, that's just what i was looking for. :)
although... while we're talking about getting it machined in any way, i'll revert to R/C car knowledge, and ask purely out of curiosity: if i were to get them perfectly spaced, etc, how badly would drilling holes to lighten the flywheel effect it's durability.
now, i realize it's probably not feasible, especially since the clutch on an R/C car is VERY different, and nothing actually presses against the flywheel. i'm just curious.
this is of what i speak:

i know cmac had his SVT flywheel machine lightened and balanced... this was not done by drilling holes, but rather just removing material from the outer ring

that's rather interesting... seems like it wouldn't be worth the time and money, though. how heavy was it when he was finished?

i'm not sure on how much it weighed

Uridian, the SVT Clutch and reg pressure plate are compatible.. it was strongly suggested to replace the TOB/slave cylinder at the same time.
at 57k my clutch was almost done.
I upgraded to the
SVT Clutch, SVT pressure Plate, and TOB/Slave Cylinder
For less than 300 shipped.. actually 286 shipped. :)

did you do the work yourself? If not how much did all that cost?

No I didn't do the work myself, my engine had to be taken out, which includes detaching
the tranny.. which upon inspection needed a new clutch. and usually when replacing
a clutch the $60 slave cylinder/throwout bearing is cheap insurance. I believe labor hours
are 11-19 for a clutch replacement, so figure a normal shop will charge between 65-85/hr
not cheap if a shop does it.. mine just happened to be wrapped up in the engine fiasco.

It is up to you, but if the clutch is worn and needs replacement, I would replace the entire assembly (pressure plate and throw out bearing as well) since you don't want to be pulling out the tranny in a few months or so because the pressure plate is done. Also make sure that you have a shop that you trust perform the work since I have had many friends that replaced a clutch and it was only adjusted and got taken for the price of the clutch plus labor, just a FYI.
