does Yakima or Thule or whoever make any roof-rack stuff for new cougars? Not that I can see by looking at the roofline where anything like that would hook up, but Ive seen a roof-basket type thing on one long ago and I was thinking it'd be cool to get a rack for my bike.

It used to be a dealership option. So your best bet I think is to check a dealership, they have books that show accessories you can get for each car.

Depending on what type of bike you have (uni-cycle compared to a full-on mountain bike) I wouldn't trust any damn roof system from Ford to hold more than like 20 lbs. I wouldn't put a sleeping bag and a cooler on anything I've ever seen come "stock" from a manufacturer.

I went the expensive route...got a hitch installed and have a 2 Position RhodeGear hitch system rack. It's heavier than all get-out, but it's so damn nice 'cause nothing touches the actual body of your car and leaves no potential scratches and grime. The trunk and sunroof are always accessible and I could probably tow a truck with the thing (except the tranny and engine would give out first). Like I said, it was expensive, but...IT GOOD.

Also, it's nice to jam on the brakes when someone's tailgating you. They back off quick.

One of the problems with the yak systems (and thule I assume) is that they clamp into the gutters of cars. We don't have them since we don't have frames for our windows. The system for the cougar has 6 feet to compensate for the lack of the gutters.

When I bought my kayaks, I wanted to get a rack for my car, but the guy at the shop talked me out of it. He could have made more than twice what he did (I got a system for the Audi instead), but he wanted me to be happy. Granted, you aren't trying to lug around a 60 foot boat on your roof, but I think the same principles apply. He told me that the system wouldn't be as stable as the rack on the Audi. Also, the sunroof would not be able to be used with the system in place.

I'd try TMoney's suggestion.
