View Full Version : Tell me about NC....please.
The long and the short of it is this..I am sick of Florida. If I stay here I think I will hang myself...no joke. I want out, and I want out BAD!
I was born and raised south of Boston, so I am looking for more of a "woodsy" environment than beaches. I figure that NC is the best of both worlds. I am thinking Western NC...but you tell me.
Where is the cost of living low but the salarys high?
Give me as much background on NC as you can.
Thank you,
Chris

I live in SC.. so I can't give you too my info on NC.. But.. the mountains are nice.. but that's coming from someone who lives near the beach.. if you ask someone who lives in the mountains, they may tell you different. BUT, no matter what, we would love to have you as a part of Carolina NECO!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOO, don't move to NC. I personally don't like it here, maybe because I've been here my whole life. There just isn't anything to do around here. Thats just my opinion, but someone else might actually like it here. If I move anywhere it will be somewhere way away from a race track. I hate getting stuck in all this race traffic.

i love it here fett.....lived here all my life. i've been down to florida, over to miss, been to cali..........i'm in Greensboro, which is right in the middle of NC. i'm hours from the mountains and beach, nuff said.......i would however suggest Raleigh. i went to school there and loved it cause it's a little closer to the beach and there are less "red-necks", lol. there are lots of places to choose from though. come and visit us, ****, i sound like a freakin commercial.

I moved into NC from NY, and I love it here, I plan to stay here my whole life. I think for the most part people grow up hating the state that they were born in, I know I despise NY and will never move back. I live in Charlotte, it's a beautiful area, I'll probably buy a house here or somewhere near it. To me, Charlotte is perfect. It's 4 hours to the beach, a few hours to the mountains...there are wooded areas of charlotte, city areas, etc....it's 2 hours to the 1/4 m drag strip, 45 mins to the 1/8th...im all set :) As for the cost of living I couldn't tell you, everything is expensive for me because I'm in college. But there are a ton of jobs here!
Thanks for the responses everyone, keep them coming. I enjoy the opinions, and I really need as much info on cost of living, expenses, what avg incomes look like, jobs, ect ect.
I have lived just about everywhere at one point, I lived in San Diego for a short while, spent some time in San Antonio, obviously Boston and South Florida. Down here jobs are hard to come by, income is not the greatest, and cost of living is getting out of control. For the most part, I don't know any single person or family that is really thriving down here. Most everybody here lives paycheck to paycheck...something I do not want to do.
I want to find a place where I can thrive and really get ahead. NC just seems right for some reason...I just need to find out how difficult it is to live there.
Truth be told, if I could afford it, I would move back to the South Shore MA area...but cost of living up there is insane. I figure as I get more and more info on NC, I will make a trip up there to look around...I am looking at Winston-Salem, Greensboro area. From the limited info I have been able to gather, that area seems like it has a pretty low cost of living, I just don't know about the jobs in that area.
Thank you again.

Western NC is a beautiful mountain area. No comparison to SC or eastern NC. Living in the mountains is great. cost of living is not terribly high, varying on area. You have mountain luxury, country, and the small city all within 20 mins of each other.
I know soooo many people who have moved from FL to Western NC. Most notably Asheville. The climate here is great. the summer is hot but not unbearable. Fall is Amazingly beautiful, we have snow, and spring is like a new awaking. Asheville is vastly different than eastern NC and SC, which are the flat plains and plantation lands of the early Confederate south.
http://www.biltmoreestate.com/ <-- this has many great pictures of the Asheville Area.
WNC has been attracting the movie industry. popular movies filmed in asheville and WNC include: Last of the Mohicans, Patch Adams, My Fellow Americans, Hannibal, Richie Rich, 28 days, < by watching any of these movies you will be able to see the great vistas and many areas of Asheville and WNC.
And the best part about the mountains is Curves! thats right! Exactly where the Cougar really shines. Oh how i love the way my Cougar handles on mountain roads.
If you want to come check out asheville, I would be more than happy to let you stay with me for a weekend and show you around the asheville area and a bit of WNC.

I spent the majority of my childhood in Fl, and I understand what you are talking about. I have also lived in many places along the Eastern Coast. If you are going to choose NC as your next place to live, I would definetly pick the Charlotte area. I personally do not like the Western part of NC, I personally like civilization, and it is to far away from any decent size city. Charlotte is not a terribly expensive place to live either, especially if you live right outside the city in an area like Huntersville or Cornelius. Salaries are fairly decent here too.
Hope that helps,
/hunter

well I don't even live here, but I'll tell ya one thing...I nearly crapped my pants in joy when I found out that $500/mo apartments really existed here. I dunno how that compares with Florida, but to a Californian, I'm thinking even our local homeless population can afford that...myself including

how many quarter miles do you have to go to do a quarter mile?
Fett: try this salary calculator (http://www.homefair.com/homefair/calc/salcalc.html) to give you a better idea of the cost of living differences.
my wife's family lives in greenville, sc and driving thru nc, i noticed it's nicer than i thought.
it just all depends on if you want to live in rural, metro, or in between areas.
