hey i rang round everyone(literally!) and the few best ones i found (all within £200 of each other) are
greenlight insurance- this is who i am with at the moment i have nine points on license and 3yrs no claims on a 2000 2.5 v6 cougar 24v lowered with an exhaust and stereo sytem covered up to £500 (the headunit only) and they cover windscreen with a £50 excess
next cheapest was
adrian flux- very competitive and they understand about the mods you do to the car and will value them accordingly rather than paying lowest price if something does happen!
cia- again very competitive and they understand mods not as knowledge able as adrian flux but not far off
last one sounds strange but it was
tesco insurance- they quote online and it is very easy to do does not take long and is a good benchmark to give to the others to beat they dont cover mods but it gives you a benchmark figure as to what it should be roughly as you dont have many mods.hope it helps let me know how it turns out.
phone numbers are
greenlight- 01277 263030
cia- 0870 444 2 666
adrian flux- 08700 777 888
tesco is online:confused:

Could try Privalege - they specialise in higher risk drivers. Mentioned my Janspeed exhaust to them and cover is still just over £500 with full NCB.

Well guys,
My present Insurer, Halifax thought nothing of my new alloys and weren't going to charge anymore. They took exception to my tint and twin exhaust though and declined any new quotation. shocked;
HIC wanted £700 with all mods declared.
Adrian Flux was the best though at £588 with 4 years NCD and all mods declared. :)
Thanks to all...

I used the broker Chris Knott (can't remember the number but is online).
Quote went down from 2100 to 700 (0 ncb).
Hope this helps,
Alan
