I have a digital camera this time around so I just wanted to post some pics of some of my fun tonite.
No engine or front end on the car, so hooking the cherry picker up to the subframe made for easy maneuvering of the cougar out of garage onto driveway
Pic of the engine back from engine builder
i just like the look of this pic... the red stuff if you don't know is assembly lube
engine taped off ready for paint
after 1 coat
left bank after 1 coat
right bank after 1 coat
water pump, alt bracket, idler pulley housing
i didn't take any more pics but 3 coats of paint sit on it now... the starter motor and trans were also painted to match... looks VERY hot right now... looks so good you would almost not want to put it in a driven car :)

dude... that is AWESOME. now that my engine won't be done for a while, and i can finish at a leisurely pace, i'm gonna start brainstorming about what i can paint/polish and how...

Looks nice, but I dunno. All those moving parts and grime flying around it's gonna start to chip and look weird.

Often times you will find an engine painted and they don't suffer from chipping, unless it was a real bad paint job... We cleaned the engine for about 3 hours before we started painting to ensure good adhesion, and applied 3 coats to it... tonite another 2 coats will go on and i'm sure there won't be a problem after that....

Has anyone posted flow numbers on 3.0L heads yet?
PuckPuck
03-12-2003, 12:06 PM
I never got actual numbers however if I remember correctly a 3.0L heads flows slightly better than 2.5L heads with 3.0L valves... don't quote me on that though cause i'm not 100% positive

Stock 3L heads flow at 180, after my P&P job from Kinger they flowed out at 280 without hitting max lift.

if anyone cares... I didn't do much last night, as the clear coat paint takes longer to cure. But I did get the trans, water pump, alternator, starter, pulleys mounted on the engine and a few coats of clear put on it too.

Paint looks awsome man I was trying to just sand down all the dirt and polish up spots but the block would have been impossible. Great idea I hope it holds up. Get some more pics when you can.

More Pics :)
The only thing I can think that I would need to do before installing it is putting the DMD on (paint is drying) and the coil pack. However before doing the coil pack I wanted to ensure I was getting good ground and have a question about it.
Anyhow here are the pics... it's getting late and I'm going to bed, so I'll make up descriptions for them tomorrow morning.

That is beautiful, how should the paint hold up over time?
I want my engine painted :(
Hey Puck did you ever go check on my baby? Make sure its stored inside :)

Pierre ... I'm thinking that with all the flow you have in the P&P heads that the stock 2.5L manifolds are not going to flow enough and will be you limiter in this N/A buildup. My advice is to call Marty at MSDS and inquire about larger primary tubed headers. I remember someone mentioning that he is now doing headers for the 3.0 crowd using a different (larger) tube size.

If you knew how much money I have already spent into it you'd understand why I can't afford them at this point. Although last night when installing the rear header my best friend pipes up and says "make sure it's on good cause we ain't taking it off / putting it on when the engine is in the car."... i looked up at him and said "I plan on buying headers soon"... he flicked his smoke at me :)
Jesse, I have put tons of clear, but if you notice in one pic you'll see a nice scratch on the starter solenoid. Kinda pissed me off :(. Although since I installed all the accessories already I really only need to drop it in, hook up the motor mounts, PCM Connector and half shafts (plus a few other minor things)... so scrathing it should be quite minimal. I am as careful as possible when swinging a wrench. Once the engine runs and gets hot, the paint will bake on and hold better as it is ceramic based.

ok i'm wasted... i didn't get much done because the beer bong (actually the funnel i was going to use to fill the trans with) came out....
so instead of cool pics of my engine, instead i have pics of me just having fun :)
progress, well i did manage to modify the 3.0L igntion coil brakcet to accept the 2.5L coil so I now have that bolted well, as well as all the grounds set and bosh plugs put in... besides that i prepped the engine bay (cleaned it up a little) and besides actually bolting (4 bolts) the coil pack and the DMD onto the block it goes in tomorrow morning (prolly afternoon, i'm sure i'll be hungover)...
btw: we drank 3 cases of beer, plus the 6 or 7 i had in my fridge.. i'm now sipping the last beer right now... i feel like a good ole canadian again :)

Hey puck I hate you for pict 17..
Anyway we found the engine goes in slicker then snot WITHOUT the DMD on then install it after its in, it allows like 2-3" of more clearance side to side and made life a lot easier and no scratches in the engine bay.

update:
good news: after some blood, sweat and tears the engine is in and mounted. no drive shafts or suspension. :)
bad news: can't get it to turn over. electrical problem but we were not able to isolate it. :(

you can't start it without the shafts in it, can you? wouldn't it spew tranny fluid everywhere?
PuckPuck
03-16-2003, 02:20 AM
the spindle coming out of the trans are in, but the inner CV boots are not connected to them....
I'm hoping my problem is a bad relay... everything is in the engine, all connections made, i have power everything works... BUT the starter :(
even the black/grey wire for the solenoid isn't getting any power... no clicks/ticks/noises... anyhow I have a family friend mechanic whom specializes in the electronics coming over monday to look it over... i'll try to find another relay tomorrow and hope it's that if not, i'll just wait for that guy to take a look at it....
I have more pics and will post them... just gotta find my camera first :)

yeah that's the relay me thinks is blown....
Anyhow more pics... theses are the actual engine install pics... although not many of them as the engine was already prepped and the drop in was very smooth actually... afterwards it's just making the final connections, then figuring out why she wouldn't start... then today i decided to give the car a shower in the driveway....

hey thats me in pics 19 and 21 :)
wait a second... you got the car outside the garage to clean it without putting the wheels back on. hrm. you didn't perhasp use the engine lift to pull the front while pushing the back ? nice move hehe
PuckPuck
03-17-2003, 10:48 AM
if you look closely at the driveway pics, you'll see the engine lift leveler still sitting on the engine... one chain around upper mount, other chain around front subframe.... using this setup, one person alone can move the car around.... pretty nifty :)
have some thoughts about the no start condition also.... PATS!!!
I just need to find out what exactly happens when PATS stops liking you
btw: charged the yellow top and made the car slam tunes for a few mins last night too :)

Hey puck... i just remembered that when pats is disableing the engine... the little red light doesnt come on, on the dash. If its flashing or OFF then pats is having a fit.
PuckPuck
03-17-2003, 09:39 PM
dash light still flashes.... but after doing some other tests today i'm even more confident it is PATS...
here's why:
No sounds, no clicks nothing when turning key over. Solenoid feed wire doesn't even get power. Ground wire on solenoid is a fully working ground.
When I jump the solenoid using the good ole screwdriver trick, I get fuel, air, but no spark. Unless of course theses double plats are really special plugs and don't spark when held next to a grounded piece of steel.
Next I would "possibly" suspect ignition fuses or something, but that wouldn't stop the starter from kicking over.

Another American I must educate:
Before 1998, Labatts' Brewing Company used to import Budweiser from Anheuser-Busch. Today Canadian Budweiser is brewed in Canada by Labatts' using their own recipe, under license from Anheuser-Busch. The Canadian flavored version taste similar to Labatt's Blue, just not as thick. Which may also be the reason why Budweiser is the fastest growing beer (by sales) in Canada. It is still stronger than the American version of the beer, and is completely made in Canada, by Canadians.
Therefore I am allowed to drink "Budweiser beer, brewed by Labatt's brewing company In Canada"
click here for a very quick blurb about this (http://www.labatt.com/brand/part/pt.html)
btw: most of the "popular" beers in canada originating from other countries are brewed in canada by a canadian company using their own recipe.
