View Full Version : Precat Knock Out...

From the searches and PuckPuck's how to it sounds like some cars need some fancy electronics when gutting the precats. My question is since I have a 2002 can I just take it off knock the junk out, and replace everything without fancy electronics? Will some sensor read the levels of (whatever is bad..polution i guess) are too high? Or will an increase in flow throw something out of wack?

you just need the mil eliminator to trick the computer into thinking there's still a cat there. it just tests cat efficiency. if not, you'll just get a cel.

or get your bottom O2 sensor routed so it's behind your main cat :)

I thought 01's and 02's didn't have sensors behind the pre-cats?

DING DING DING!!!!!! we have a winner. only 99-00 cougs had the bottom o2 sensor. so you shouldn't need mil eliminators. however if for some wierd reason you needed them, they are very easy to make.

what would the CEL message be? would it read something like "lean condition, bank 0" like a regular O2 sensor malfunction? or is the computer smart enough to tell you your efficiency monitor is hosed? the reason i ask is that i had someone pull a "lean condition bank 0" on my car, and i'm assuming it's an actual O2 sensor, and not just the "efficiency" O2 sensor.

Uridian:

The CEL will read "catalyst system below threshold efficiency". No lean/rich codes will come of it- The uppers control the A/F. The bottoms are for emissions only, so far that I've seen.

Edit: You may also get a "Catalyst not present" or the like- You'll know it when you see it.

yeah the code is Catalyst something.... and 01/02s do not need the MIL eliminators....

hey puck puck, will the mil eliminators be detectable when you go to smog the car?

Not unless they get under the car for the visual inspection.

Also what about torque with all the bolts taken out during this process. Do I have to be careful on torque settings or just go a till they are pretty tight? Is it best to use lock-tight on them to keep them from backing out sometime?

the bolts going from the manifold into the head should be torqued... the rest of the exhaust bolts, heck i don't think i have ever torqued an exhaust bolt... i just put them on tight

you could always put ziptied, black wireloom over it. makes it look neat and provides an extra measure of protection for the mil eliminator.

The 2001-2002s have the O2 sensor behind the Main Cat. You can either cut off the main cat or cut out the 2 precats, but don't do both. I had the main cat cut and it increased power and gave it a better sound.

I guess i better get a torque wrench. And figure out the specs.
