The other day in the cougar I was getting about 21-23 mpg on the highway at speeds between 70 and 80. I even used cruise control to try to get better gas milage.

Even the mustang got about 25 highway! Is something wrong?

I don't get super gas milage either, about 16 in-town and depending how fast I go about 23-26 on the interstate. I found that my car gets the best gas milage going about 70 mph with the cruise on.

Ive been getting that type of gas milage all along, I thought it was normal?

2002 V6 ATX.

I got way better gas mileage when my car was stock. But i did notice my MPG went up with my Yodude setup

Maybe this is normal, I just thought it was strange that the 4.6 V8 did better than the 2.5 V6?

NEVER go by the cluster gauage ... it's adaptive and tries to fortell your gas milage based on previous driving habits. Plain and simple ... do it by hand at the gas pump:

1) fill up gas tank till the pump shuts itself off ... DO NOT TOP OFF! Don't even up it one penny!
2) clear triptometer
3) drive till tank near empty
4) go to same gas station and same pump
5) repeat step 1
6) look at receipt and jot down milage from the triptomemter & clear it again.
7) repeat steps 3-6 each time you want to check milage.

When you get home, devide your milage that you jotted down by the gallons of gas put into the tank.

My gas mileage is horrible to. I've been averaging about 15.1 around town according to my little computer thing. And I don't drive that aggressive. So your saying that little computer thing isn't right?

I said what I meant and I meant what I said and also I said what I said ... how about your reread my post ;)

I read your post. But It doesn't make sense. If you fill up your tank, and then reset all your little computer things, (you can reset the one for gas milage too), it does exactly what you're saying to do. It divides the miles traveled by the gallons used. So I don't understand how it can be wrong.

What Trevor says makes perfect sense. You don't take any values from the computer EXCEPT for the trip odometer, to see how many miles the car travelled... everything else that is shown is adaptive.

Ok, I got ya. Sorry Trevor. Didn't mean to come off as an ass.

If you calculate by hand and then have issues, there are ways to get better gas milage. However, keep in mind that the car from the factory is something like 20/29 MTX and 19/28 ATX ... I could be off, but those numbers ring a bell. Things to consider. Milage on plugs/wires/O2 sensors and don't forget spark plug gap.

I've checked with pen and pad compared to what the car says and it has always been within 0.5 miles per gallon for me.

yeah, thats how the mustang had to be done...it didn't have any fancy stuff...i thought they computer told pure real time readings by know how much fuel was being sprayed also know distance...i guess i'll try it out by hand and see how it does that way.

First off: I dont mean anything behind it nor am i questioning anyones judgment, but theres something im still missing with the MPG computer. Youre saying its adaptive... What do you mean? If (X / Y) = Z, and your odometer reading is represented by X, then what is represented by Y to divide by and come up with answer Z, being the MPG readout? i'm a little lost there. It would make sense if it metered fuel expendeture (as Y).

My experience with mileage recently is that If I get on the highway and cruise at 65, I can reset the MPG average thing and it and it says i get 30+mpg, and itll stay that way for a great length of time, too. Itll drop down to 27 or 25 going up a big hill, but coming down the other side coasting itll shoot up to like 38... then under load nestles down at like 30-32 again after a bit. However, I couldnt ever get it to average past 27mpg on a 10 minute long flat straight surface stock. I used to get OVERALL better mileage tho, i was easily able to go over 300 miles stock on a full tank. Now with intake and exhaust i can only go about 270 before suckin' fumes. Course, I (still :flushed: ) have an intermittent EGR excessive flow Cel... I have a new DPFE sensor to install, a tuneup to perform, and a $15 low mileage EGR valve to experiment with for warmer days. If none of that helps, then its like the stock restrictions allow for better city mileage but basic mods makes it burn a lot more fuel upon acceleration. Either that or after mods we all have heavy feet.

Actually... the MPG computer calculates using
the number of Fuel Pulses through the injectors..
vs miles travelled... and its a on going average..
but for the best results, run it by hand..
