Carb cleaner! You can buy it at autostores. Use it to clean alot of other stuff... just don't get any in your eyes!

if you have access to one, use a sandblaster. works great and will also smooth it out a bit. Make sure you rinse it off real good though

Brake parts cleaner works better than carb cleaner.

B12 Chemtool is great!

Wouldn't it be better to soak the entire manifold in some sort of solution? It looks like carb cleaner would not do a good job on the inside, plus it would be pretty hard to get the toothbrush into all those bends.

Actually I found that a baby bottle brush and brake parts cleaner worked great. The baby bottle brush is basically a flexable brush on a flexable stick, it can pretty much get every bend and twist of the UIM.

hot dip the thing and leave it in the parts washer for a couple of hours,
it'll look like new.

Depends on what brake parts cleaner you use, the new "environment friendly" crap doesn't work at all. Get some Motorcraft or Wurth, that crap works great. The techs use it to clean just about everything, including engine internals.

we used brake cleaner to turn black pistons into nice shiny clean pistons

A friend of mine works for a shop, and they do manifold cleaning and injector cleaning. Buy a can of Gunk. It cost about 7 bucks. Hard to find though. All you do to use it is have someone in your car revving the engine up to a steady 2000 rpm. Then start to spray the can into the throttle body. Use the whole can though. Your car will spit black smoke out of the exhaust, its just the carbon build up. It will not only clean the UIM and the LIM but also the injectors at the same time. It works good.

I kinda did something like this at 20k miles, but the problem is our cars are so computer-rigged that when you detach the air intake accordian pipe, the computer knows that the air is not coming in thru the MAF so the engine ceases after you hit the gas. What I did is sprayed down the TB (manually opening and closing slowly) for 10 seconds at a time, reattach the accordian, then run the car for like a minute at 2000RPM, then repeat the whole procedure a few times.

Obviously this is not as good as taking apart the intake manifolds and brush them, but it does do a decent job. After this spraying-cleaning I actually tripped a CEL -- probably from suddenly getting so much air after the cleaning? I reset the battery and everything was fine.

Another thing you may want to consider when using that TB spray stuff, is to rig you secondaries to stay open temporarily, so that both sets of runners are pulling in the cleaner.:) I just used a bent up piece of coat hanger.
