Hi Gang,
It's been a long time since I've posted anything. Just so happens I'm going through a divorce, so now I've got plenty of time on my hands. Time to talk about my car. This Love is for real.
I purchased my new Cougar a couple of months ago. Due to my domestic situation, I wasn't really getting the chance to get into it. Now I am driving the crap out of it, and I have just one thing to say. The NE Cougar is a pretty impressive car.
I've always been a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury fan. I've been that way since I was a kid. Not to say that I haven't had good GM cars. (my 95 Supercharged Riviera comes to mind) I guess it's a father son thing, but I have to add, I've never had a Ford division product leave me sit. There is nothing worse than sitting in your car waiting for the Tow Truck driver with salami on his breath so he can talk closer to you than you thought possible. That being said, I find one fault with Mercury. They did two things wrong with this car.
#1 It wasn't marketed properly
#2 During the Cougars production run, they could have stretched the car about 2 inches, and fixed the rear headroom problem. The cars only fault as I see it.
Driving the car: Given my current marital status, I decided to get into this car big time. It always helps when your bumming out about something, to have something else to devote your time too. I have to say, this is one heck of an automobile. The back seat head room thing doesn't bother me (no kids) and it's always fun to leave the hatch up when your passengers get in, and then give them the little love tap on the noggin when you close the hatch.
Mine is a Grabber Green (cool color) V-6 with the 5-speed. I've read some of the mod stuff on this site. I don't think I'll go too crazy, although a little sweeter exhaust note and a nice intake to let her breath is definitely in my plans. Living in Pennsylvania, the cold weather can really make this shifter stick until the car warms up. It's actually a good workout for your right arm. Too bad I don't have a second Cougar with right hand drive. That would give my arms a real workout in the winter.
The V-6 in this car is definitely one of the sweetest Ford has ever made. My brother has a 'stang with the 6, and this engine seems a lot sweeter. The car definitely has plenty of get up and gone. One of my favorite things to do in this car is cruise down to New Jersey (have family there) on the PA Turnpike. The ride is slightly stiff, but of course my last car was a 1997 Lincoln Continental which is designed for ride, the Cougar was designed to DRIVE! Cruising down the turnpike with the stereo cranked, smoking a nice cigarette (guess that makes me evil) and drinking a Diet Code-Red Mountain Dew...Nirvana.
Sometimes a car is just a car, other times it is a driving experience. On PA's mountain roads, this car is one of the most FUN I've ever owned. Flips back and forth better than one of those steel ball things you used to have on your office desk. Truly a driver's machine. I hope they bring the Cougar back, and let's hope it's as good or better than this one. We all know that Mercury got it right with this one.
Have fun, drive safe, and remember, if you're bumming. Go for a RIDE!
