I was wondering how much of a difference, performancewise between the Zetec and the Duratec, seems like almost everyone here has the Duratec. Anyone have the stats of the 4? And could the 4 mtx beat the v6 atx? Just kind of interested.

There's a pretty big difference. The I4 comes with 120 horsepower, and the V6 comes with 170. As far as I4 MTX beating a V6 ATX, it's possible, but the driver of the I4 would have to be a damn good driver. And even then, it'd be pretty close. But the advantage to having the I4 is that there's a much wider market performance wise since you share the same motor as the Focus. And you also have a ton more space in the engine bay to cram goodies like superchargers and turbochargers.

I4 cougar comes iwth 125 hp stock......focus engines are very different.....very......cougar I4's have more in common with escorts equipped with VCT and are pretty much identical to the contour I4's......
and yes there is TONS of room for the turbochargers.....that is if you wanna fabricate your own.....however there is not supercharger that will fit the I4 cougar......if i wans't drunk i'd explain in detail....but i'm drunk.....so no

Hey don't know if you care but the I4 is vct(variable cam timing) and the focus well it's a zetec... most parts will fit but you gotta modify most... as for turbos and whatnot performance fords is claiming to be prototyping one for our cars.Headers wise im glad to say that I will be having some specked out and hopefullt they will go on sale soon. This should be done at the end of this month. As for the I4MT beating a V6 AT .... It can happen and i have done it racing a stick one though, but i did have a short ram intake, custom exhaust, jetV unit, ford racing wires and tahts about it.So like Catman said, it can happen but it depends on the driver.Hey checkout www.performancefords.com
and maybe you will get some info, and make sure you check out the thread on cougar specific headers for further details on these babies.

it's taking them forever to get the turbos outta the test stages.....they've gone nowhere since like october....

An MTX I4 will beat a ATX V6....there's soo much of a power loss when you got an automagical tranny....given of course the MTX I4 driver isnt missing a leg to shift
And yes....there are plenty of mods available you can retrofit to work on the cougar zetec...most of my car is focus/escort.......but not every cougar is VCT ;)
with as little as a intake and removing the resonator off the exhaust you can spank a v6 atx and with a little more mods you will spank a mtx the trans is the same so we will launch faster then the 6, a less mass vs. weight,
just read that in a car book i thought it would sound cool.

hey gyger before i go any further i want to let you know taht your car looks awesome.. anyway the only cougar mtx i have raced happened rigth before I got my 4banger, and ofcourse i wasnt in my present fourbanger at the time. Anyway i was driving mine and my lil bro's at the time project car and not only did we beat it but we raped it and ripped it a new one. Not to mention the guys was bragging at the light stop of his msd headers, some custom chip, and the svt lower and upper manifold, So i raced it and and like i said i schooled him somewhat.so yeah thats about it cause thers not very many cougars around here and the ones i have seen are ATX and are driven by old ppl or white chicks....And as for my fourbanger runnig the 1/4 haven't done it yet,but im sure it will get to the end of the 1/4 eventually
oh by the way if youre wondering what i was driving at the time ,it was a 63" mercury comet coupe(2 door, rare) with a cobra transmission...heehee.. the only way to beat merican is to drive American
FYI..
stock V6 ATX is about 125 FWHP
stock I4 MTX is about 105 FWHP
V6 engine is about 50-75 lbs heavier than I4 BUT ATX is about 100 lbs heavier than MTX...
V6 ATX clocks about 17 sec in the mags with I4 at about 17.5 sec.
I4 MTX may be more fun to drive (ATXs suck) but faster...???

If youre reffering to me, I never said i had a ATX. But if your trying to be a punk Ill be glad to show you what a 404 engine with 380 to the wheels and rear wheel drive can do...:) But like other ppl have said before ATX V6 have a slight dissadvantage but hey you want to argue then take it to AL and Teflonworm. And for your info i have taken it to a V6 ATX, read the thread

the MTX's have a higher redline and when you change gears you start off at higher rpms.....i'm gonna try racin an atx v6 soon with my lil zetec and see what happens...i'm pretty curious...with a better clutch i think it would be a sure thing.....should be interesting though....
also...just wonderin...where'd you get the fwhp numbers?...just wonderin....i'm actually kinda surprised the stock I4 mtx had 105 even if it is just to the flywheel......was it an actual dyno?....just wonderin...
edit: oh yeah....and if it was 105 fwhp wouldn't that make it approx 140 (give or take) to the crank?.....just wonderin...i could be wrong...

hey FastZetecCougar i wasnt referring to you man, its just that it drives me crazy when ppl troll around forums to instigate, Gyger asked a question out of nowhere and im betting he never read the reply to what he asked and DanN comesup with hihs stast from a mag and im thinking he's rubbing in his svt car and thats why i offered to show him what mine and my lil bro's 63 merc comet coupe can do. So hey this is the I4 preformance thread right? not the "All trolls welcome to bash on I4's as i my self am a proud owner of aa I4..sorry for the confusion fastZ about my post..:slap:

Based on my experience, I'd say an I4 MTX could hang with a V6 ATX up to around 60MPH. In fact, the I4 might actually pull away a little at the start of second gear. Above 60, the ATX's gearing is no longer a significant disadvantage, and it can use its 20 extra FWHP effectively.

hehe frank, are you refering to that night on route 9 when we first met and i was keeping pretty good with you?

Sorry to bring this up after so long.
But I just wanted to say thanks WHITEZETEC for the compliment on my car
Just so everyone knows I wasn't trying to come in here and start something
I was just curious as to what the I4 could do. This is the I4 performance area.
Anyway my question was have any of you beat slightly modded V6 MTX's?
fastzeteccougar did you beat a MTX V6? If so nice job man was he modded?
And what do you guys have for mods anyway?

each had intake/exhaust.....
it's all up to the launch....since then we've gone back and forth beatin each other..him winnin most of the time.....we just gutted his precats last nigth....so he's gonna have an advantage on me now...time to get a job and a new clutch
gyger

so it was an MTX V6 Cougar with intake and exhaust?
and you only have an intake and exhaust and you beat him?
nice driving man!!!

Sorry, late reply, I do not check out zetec stuff very often..
FWHP numbers are chassis dyno numbers mostly from old CEG posts in dyno forum.
105 HP (Ive seen range about 100-105 really)..works out to 126.5 crank HP if you assume 17% driveline loss.
And you were right, I was not ragging on zetecs..just pointing out that they are a bit of a power disadvantage in a race. You are correct that they can rev higher (without chip) and can also execute shifts faster...and yes may pull out a win in a race if they drive better than the V6 ATX guy. And IMO ..more fun!
I'll cut the other guy some slack as he is in Afganistan??
