I'm usually not one to bench race, but a guy from a local car forums wants to know if I want to set up a race sometime and he has a stock grand prix GTP....

now, does an SVT with nothin but an intake stand a chance? I havent lost yet and dont want my first one to be visible! lol

That would be a good race- that I want to see. GTP's are ALL automatics, I think, but they ARE supercharged...

And the SVT's are just screamers. That would be a great race. Battle of the mid-size sedans!

BTW, since he's still stock, I think you'd take him, being that you're a 5-speed and modded- a little.

what do you run at the track?

GTPs typicaly run between 14.7-15.2 stock. they are quite quick, they have 240HP and 280lb-ft .

if you race from a roll you'd have a better chance, they dont have good top end. but be prepared for it to take you off the line .

I dont know my exact, but cougar519 ran 15.2's and I beat him by a car length from 40-120...so I guess 15.1. I will try and go from a roll since I cant launch that well yet

I raced a GTP and we were dead even so I would think you would be ok with your SVT. Just give it a try and see where you stand. I would say I am putting out around the same numbers as a stock SVT so it will be a good race.

yeah like i said they arent good from a roll. they really lack top end power. as they are pushrod engines. be carful though, a stock looking GTP can be in the 13s. SLP make a Cold Air Box that looks just like the stock one. and the smaller S/C pullies look no different. just with those too mods people have been known to break high 13s. because they only run 4PSI stock. a 3.25 pully puts that to about 8PSI . and an set 1.6 Rockers take away that lacking top end problem, and you never know they are there until its too last.

i'd sugest do both. go from a dead stop and then from a roll.

The GTP's are very fast... as Fastam has said... a little modification, and throw in a shift kit, he would take you.

Listen to fastam.....exactly what he is true....first off with a smaller pulley the torque numbers go up as well as hp..so the roll = no no

and take advantage of the SVT's handling...to be honest..straightline racing u are not gonna win..especially if u only have intake.....try race where there are turns....then u have a chance......

search for it on the contour forum.....there have been many disputes between svt's and GP gtp's....

The fastest stock GTP I ever saw run pulled a 14.3 at the track...

So they are quick...avg times I see were all around a 14.7

Would depend on the driver. I've driven both cars and the speed felt about the same. Off the line the GTP will get the jump ahead thanks to it's torque, but up on high the SVT C should start catch up if not even out.

Just looking at test drives on car-stats.com they claim the SVT C pulls 15.4 in the 1/4 and the GTP pulls 15.0 in the 1/4. So if that much is true and you have a performance intake you should be able to hang if not pull.

Just my opinion. . .but the GTP's are pretty quick for a mid sized sedan

I followed GTPs for quite a while. My old roommate had a 13 second GTP and I've learned as much as I need to know about them.

First off, a stock GTP can run a 15.6 or a 14.6. Huge variance. With the blower, heat soak is a major problem. If you race the guy on a cool day while he has a cool motor, he could run 14's stock. If you race him after he's been running the car hard he may run mid 15's.

Either way, why do you race? For fun I hope. If so, you have nothing to lose. Even if you lose the race, you still have fun.

A good friend of mine has a GTP, we race all the time and every time he kicks my a$$. But then again right now Im all stock.

Car-Stats.com is hardly ever right. and Mags arent usealy right either. just a bit of a quide.

most people have have talked to that own GTPs say high 14s stock. which isnt too far off from 15 sec.

yes it is also ture about the heat sink problems, thats why its best for a GTP to run in very cold wheather. at night is also better for them. anytime they can get cooler air. What happens is when the air gets too hot,it begins to detonate. so the ECU pulls timming and killing power. the problem gets worse when you start putting more boost in them. thats why an aftercooler is a good idea with a GTP.

If you enjoy racing then just do it for the fun of it. I think an SVT with intake is a good match against a stock GTP. As far as racing in the twisties...bad idea IMO. Be safe, back road twisties are for good cruising only, two-way traffic/people walking could mean disaster, nevermind manslaughter charges. Highway twisties...if it's a good corner and you're racing at high speeds, I hope you have good tires, because if you loose traction kiss your @ss goodbye. Just race the guy from a stop at the litghts 0-60 and from a roll on the freeway 60-100. Have fun and let us know what happens.

Last minute quick tip: GTP's are heavy bastards, loose the spare/jack and run 1/4 tank gas for a little extra weight advantage.

FYI......if he doesn't have PCM(chip)...then u should start the roll from 40ish....it is well know(within the GTP circle) that they are dogs from a 40 roll..that is where the stick will help out too, since they are auto's
