Whilst waiting to pick my partner up yesterday I was looking thru the Owners Guide. I noticed that it said that the "check engine warning light" and the "low coolant warning light" should illuminate when the ignition is switch on and then extinguish as soon as the engine starts. Now on my Cougar neither of the lights Illuminate when the ignition is switched on. Does anybody else's car do this? If not how easy is it to get behind the dash board to check the bulbs?

its not so easy but can be done .

firstly you will have to remove the lower panel below the drivers footwell ,additionally you need to remove your stereo system and the small panel above with the traction control and heated screen switches. Additional you need to remove( lift the small right upper panel near the door)

Once you have done this you will see that there are several screws both in the stereo upper slot and in the right panel near the door then release the screws on the upper panel and near the stereo slot.

once this is done you can then lift carefully the upper panels that covers the instrument pod, there are many clips so do it very carefully.

you will then once removed see the instrument pod itself, the screws can then be removed allowing the removal of the instrument pod.

Please be careful of the two cable connectors there is not much free cable!

Then it is easy to change the bulb, it takes around 1 hour - so make sure that you have the bulbs first!

Hope this helps

Excellent info Sat1.
Changed them today and it all came apart and back together fairly easily.
Cheers.
