View Full Version : another Twin Turbo Question

I was talking to this guy who builds turbos custom turbo kits for a variety of cars. All of which are 4 bangers. He hasnt done one for a v6 yet.

He said he could run 2 turbos. One off each exhaust bank. (one turbo off the front 3cyl bank and the 2nd turbo off the rear cyl bank)

Then using wastegates to control each turbos boost. The piping from each turbo would ypipe into the intercooler then back into the intake.

Me thinks that having each turbo running off different exhaust banks might cause a problem or possible uneven boost pressure when these 2 seperate turbos work to make boost pressure into the intake. Am i right? Or could it work?

(no talk of prices, money or how much it would cost or what would be cheaper...Please just answer the above question and present any possible issues)

Obviously the guy has never looked under the hood of a Cougar?

If you are talking about JUST the engine, yeah it can work. The engine IN a Cougar with "twin turbos" won't fit.

Why are you people OBSESSED with "twin turbo" ?!?!?!?! Do you just assume that two turbos are MUCH more better than one, and it's definately worth the extra money and headache to jam them under the hood?

I guess "twin turbos" is the new "I got nahhs!" and some people have seen the new 2F2F movie?

While independent twin turbos may not be very cool (and defnitely wouldn't fit), would it be possible to pipe out sequential twin turbos?

One small turbo spools quickly, which produces boost which generates more exhaust, which spools up the next turbo... Rinse, wash, repeat.

But seriously, Hightower, relax. TT is a state of mind, not a disease. (And girls think they're sexy.) :poke:

I agree with chris...

No one need twins in a coug, and honestly very few street cars utilize twins. Sequentioals are cool, but either way they need to be fitted.

Just get a nice sized single turbo and life will be good. A T3 Super 60 trim will work just fine, or even a T3/TO4E hybrid is nice too...

Don't lots of twin turbo supras and 300zx's convert back to Single turbo?

Yup thats very true ov3n... most of the work done at the place where my cougar is being done is converting twins back to singles..supras and 300zx and yes you guessed it Skyline GTR ALL back to singles..

Both Toyota and Mazda have released twins onto the market However converting back to a single is far better as the power delivery with twins is far from linear and the boost response is no better than a properly set up single.Nissan ran twins on the GTR and again upgrade to a single and you find that you make boost earlier and also make more top end hp as well..

I specifically said i didn't give two ****s about whats better or whats costs what or what wont fit. I didn't even say this was for a cougar!! Next time just answer the question and keep your self rightous comments to yourself.

I asked would there be any problems with each turbo running off different exhaust banks. NOT if it would FIT. NOT if a single turbo was Better.

You would have to run each of each bank...theoretically each bank should have equal exhaust...compression should be the same, air/fuel should be the same...so yes.

Of course it's theoretical, but that's where tuning comes in...

On the 300ZX if you've seen the engine bay, you'll also notice that each turbo feeds it's own TB...Basically each bank is almost independant of the other when it comes to air and fuel.

"Self rightous" ???

You come onto a COUGAR forum, stating that you have a COUGAR and you asked some guy if he could do "twin turbos" on a V6. That simply implies you are asking about putting this into a COUGAR.

If you are simply asking if a V6 engine can work with two turbos, then yes. Several OEM's have done it, and still do. They just call it "bi-turbo" now (Audi, Volvo, Bentley, Lotus, Nissan)

Your new thread is the FOURTH open thread in the Forced Induction section. I would think you have read at least one of them?
