I found the set screw on the side of the shifter but can't get it off. Is there a trick? I want to paint the trim piece that is under it.

well i am guessing you are using an allen wrench . . . the screw is a torx screw . . . so you need a 6 sided wrench thingamabob lol . . . once you get that out you need to pull might hard on the shift knob to get it off, but by doing so you are most likely to pull the wires out of your O/D button

I removed mine, and im pretty sure mine was an allen key, but i might be mistaken. Try the tork screwdriver too, it will probably be a 15 size torx screw.
Once its loose you will have to wiggle and pull and the shifter will just pop out.
The wires will amost for certain come out of the O/D button. So to save you some headache, id reccomend just hooking up anotehr switch to the wires and mounting it on the side of your console, instead of trying to hook the green O/D button back up.

Yea I reread what I typed...I am sure it is an allen...I have gotten the screw out of the side...if I read everything right if the shifter comes off it is hard/impossible to get the od button hooked back up??

^^^ He's right. I used to work in a dealer fast-lube. I occasionally got to do other things, like remove the shifter form an atx mustang.
First try and disconnect the o/d. then remove the screw and pull like hell. Don't pull too hard and hit your self ing the head like i did. Felt like i just woke up the rest of the day!!lol
