Ok.... So i'm just about ready to kill my car.... since i got it i've gone through 4 fuel pumps before my warranty was up.... they replaced my last one at 35900 miles, i now have 72000 miles and my pump is on its way out the door.... is there an aftermarket fuel pump available for the car and if so where could i locate such an item? thanks in advance.

There's one for the Focus @ Focus Central (http://www.focus-central.com/catalog.asp?id=5). I dunno if the Mercs are return or returnless fuel, though (this one is for returnless).

Return/Returnless is going to be determined on when exactly your car was made. If you do a search, you should be able to figure out which type of fuel system you have

Well then, if the Mercs are mixed like the Contours are, and he lists it as a 2000, he should be running returnless (switchover in Contour occured in late '98, I think).
To be sure, I'd call a Ford parts dept. and ask the model numbers on a fuel pump for your car vs. a 2000 Focus. If they're the same, guess who's in business :)

well just talked to focus central, they told me that this pump would probably not work, and even to install it in the focus requires extensive modifications to make it fit in there, and it also a race only pump. so im back to the drawing board and guessing i'm gonna be stuck with a stock fuel pump.

Do we have the same fuel pump as the V6'ers? If so, I think there are aftermarket replacements for their fuel pump, meaning there is one for us also.

In the Contour world, the I4/V6 fuel pumps are NOT the same. I doubt the Mercs share one, either.
