View Full Version : How to set off the factory ALARM!!!!
Ok maybe it is just me but I had no clue our cars had an alarm. All I thought it had was that hey thing that you had to have the key with the chip to start it....o but no it doesn't.....it's got an annoying beeping one too!!!
Ok this is how you "test" it.
1. Break out your window... (not reccomended) ...or jsut role the window down...(recommended)
2. Lock the car useing you keyless locking system!
3. Reach in and unlock it maunually...you know the button thing under than handle...or just open it from the inside and BEEP BEEP FLASH FLASH..........it's going nuts !!!!!!!!
Not sure on how to disarm it...I just hit a bunh of buttons each time I set it off.
Kinda cool if you ask me!!!!

Yeah, if you sit in the car when it is turned off and locked and open the door without pressing the unlock button first it goes off. I found that out a few days after I bought my coug. My bf went into the grocery store while I waited in the car. He took forever so I opened the door and BEEP BEEP! It took me forever to figure out how to turn it off. The grocery boy thought I was nuts.
LOL I love it....I think thats very cool! That it comes with an alarm....enuff for me anyway!

Prez.. another good method is: I wanted to see how warped my hood was after my accident.. so I pulled up on a corner.. and BEEP BEEP FLASH FLASH!
Darth.. you were the simple victim of the Mercury Cougar 5 second Anti-Passive Theft Device. :) When the car is off and the door is closed.. it turns on (the blinking thing on the dash) after, I believe, it's 5 seconds.
I had the alarm go off on me the day after my dealership tried to sell me a factory alarm for $600. They told me that the car didn't have one already! I now have 2 alarms, one is an aftermarket alarm. My factory alarm works by using my key in the door and never goes off anymore.
Only 1 things sets it off, that I've noticed.
If I park with the windows down and lock it with the keypad and then try to open the door with the interior handle it'll go nuts.
I couldn't figure it out for the longest time...

Yup, you can set it off by doing the window down, open door thing, Also if you open the trunk with the doors locked with the key it will go off, and if you got an auto starter, like i do, you have to unlock your doors befor you start it or beep beep flash flash it goes. Not good because the remote starter works at a greater distance than the remote locks so i have to leave my car unlocked alot in the winter.

thats odd, i have a remote starter in my car and i have no trouble starting it up on a cold morning when the doors are locked...

Darth.. you were the simple victim of the Mercury Cougar 5 second Anti-Passive Theft Device. When the car is off and the door is closed.. it turns on (the blinking thing on the dash) after, I believe, it's 5 seconds.
The night we brought our car home, the alarm wasn't arming itself the way the dealer said it should, so I grabbed the fancy book they gave us and tried to figure out why the directional lights weren't flashing when the doors were locked with the remote.... It turns out that if a door or the trunk is not closed tight enough, the alarm won't arm... The light on the dash that flashes when the car is turned off is tied in to the coded key.... It lets you know the system is working properly... When you start the car with a coded key, the red light will stop blinking and go solid for about 3 to 5 seconds if the system is operating properly..... Of course the dealer explained absolutely none of this to us....
Got to love those dealers!

i dotn have keyless entry so does that mean i cant do it? or what?
i have the red light!
no you must have keyless entry to have the alarm..the red light is for the ignition thing that is stored in your key.

A week after I got my car I bought a Viper system. Mine came with the factory keyless entry, but it was kinda cheap and didn't have some of the good features. My friend's saturn has the "built in alarm" which sounds like what we have. Is it really a car alarm, or just a deterant. Meaning does it just make sound and flash lights or does it actually kill your ignition and do other things? People can just cut certain wires and the alarm is disconnected. Not saying any aftermarkets systems are 100x better, if someone wants your car bad enough it will be stolen, no matter what you have. You just want to deter the common theives.

I think we are talking about two different things here. There is the 1) ignition disable and 2) car alarm.
The ignition disable is on all Cougars, I believe, and automatically turns itself on a few seconds after you take the key out of the ignition so that no one can start the car without the properly coded key. This is signified by the flashing red light on the center control panel.
The car alarm is only in the Cougars with keyless entry. You activate it by locking the doors and it is confirmed by the front & back lights flashing once. It will only get set off if you try to open the door without using your keychain to unlock the doors first (so, if someone smashes out your window or wraps a coat hanger thru the window to unlock the door, the horns should start blaring and lights flashing). I think it's a fairly lame "alarm", and it doesn't work worth a lick if someone decides to just smash out your window and grab your CDs or bag in the car and leave, but I don't think any alarm will truly make your car safe from this.

I bought a used 99 cougar. It only came w/ 1 key. No key pad or anything, but the factory alarm is on it. It goes off when locked door is opened and when trunk is opened when locked. Was there a keyless entry pad w/ alarm button? How do i find out?
Thanks
Head down to your dealler and get one..it might cost a few bucks but..it will be worth it.

So, you are saying that it is probably equipped with a keypad.
I just have to go to the dealer and buy one.
What would they have to do for it to work?
From the sounds of it..it looks like you should have it and that it maybe got lost or something...i'd have them look into it and see if it is supose to have one..

here's the best way yet. Did this on accident last summer.
Pop your hood close your doors and lock the car the alarm will activate, and after the hoods been open for a while, you can hit any of the buttons on your remote and it will just lock until you close the hood and lock it manuelly with the key. and it will not unlock for you even w/ the key until about minute after you leave it completely alone w/ no buttons or keys being used to try and unlock the car.

you guys do know that you can turn off the alarm by clicking the panic button right?
Weird. I have the flashing light and everything. I also have the remote transmitter. However I can't get this alarm to go off?? Is it possible that it is overridden or something like that?

I'm fixing to get my doors shaved. With remote keyless window rolldown. Does this mean that I have to deal with the alarm every time or is there a trick that can not set off the alarm, but at the same time leave it on when you leave the car?? If there's no way how do I get the alarm turned off?
Thanks for any info.

The panic button doesn't work to turn it off for me. Just the unlock doors button.
The thing I find most frustrating is this scenario that has happened to me now twice.
My bf and I park the car and he gets out to go get something or other. I stay in the car and he locks the door (either with the key pad or the manually) so I am safe from the nasties in the world (like the kind often found at rest stops late at night.) Anyhow, I am now stuck...
It will not let me use the button on the inside to unlock the doors, and I don't have the keypad, so if I open the door for any reason, the alarm is going to go off and there is nothing I can do about it but sit and wait till he comes back. But I'd rather have the alarm than not have it.

The alarm goes off anytime something drains power from the battery. If you open the passenger side door, the alarm doesn't go off. The reason the drivers side door goes off is because the dome light turns on. when I turned my dome light off, opening the driverside door won't make it go off. I thought that was wierd at first.... But it worked good when I busted two guys trying to steal my Kaminari Carbon Fiber hood... the switch set the alarm off, but now I have a nasty crack in the clear coat of the hood... =o( BUt that's okay, I work on aircraft, so I have access to LOTS of carbon fiber cloth and other carbon and titanium goodies... =o)
Someone tried stealing your hood??? THats FK#@$$ up!

It turns out that if a door or the trunk is not closed tight enough, the alarm won't arm
I think I have this issue. My "alarm" doesn't work. I tried all these suggestions, and it's no go. HOWEVER, my little amber "Door Ajar" LED is always lit. Won't go out. This leads me to believe a door or maybe the hatch isn't closing correctly. I've pulled in on the doors to try to make the connection, but the light doesn't even flicker. Could the hatch be the problem? How can you tell?

Hey, Smoothcougar8-
The keypads are easy to program. I just bought one from eBay for $8 and programmed it myself. You turn the key on and off 4 times within 6 seconds, then the LED on the dash goes solid red (this tells you it is in "programming mode"). Then just press any button on the pad, and turn the ignition back on to exit programming mode. That's all there is to it.

Yea,
I have the remote keyless entry and the little red flashing light too, and I tried all of the above and my alarm never goes off. What gives? I feel so unsecure now.
Bad news for you guys that have the keyless entry/convenience package and the alarm doesn't work/respond. Today when I got my Clifford Matrix RS2 Alarm/Remote Start installed the installer found out that the passenger door trigger is bad. If you are still under warranty just bring it in and have it replaced. Otherwise =( I have to do this myself

Or for those of you that your alarm doesn't work, has it always not worked? There's a way to make it inactive I believe. T
he alarm doesn't protect all that well....had my car broken into last fall, they took my Kenwood cd player, in the process they had to jam my shifter (ATX :( ) to get the player out, breaking it, our glass is incredibly thick on our windows, so that was a pain to clean up. They got the glass to fly like in every direction about 10ft or so which scratch my hood to hell. They also pryed on the door a bit, so my passen. locks were screwed up.....over $2000 worth of damage....thank goodness for insurance! Anyways, I think it's a good idea to get an aftermarket alarm if you live anywhere that some theft is a prob., our alarms won't protect from people going in and out the windows! Basically they're only good if someone is in the car trying to get out, or if the windows are down and they reach in to open the door.
Just my .02 cents! Plus you can get a basic alarm pretty cheap.

Definitely get a better alarm if you live anywhere with any theft problems. I live in the west side of columbus, it doesn't look bad, but two days after moving up here my rims got jacked. The alarm was set and all but it doesn't do anything if your car is rocked. My friends grand prix got it's locks popped also. I had to buy a garage for now until i save up for one of them 3-way sensitivity pager alarms. They tell you how hard your car is rocked/bumped and whether your pass. door, driv. door, hatch, or hood is open. They're pretty sweet. My car was on blocks for a week. I definitely recommend everyone to get wheel locks. Our cars do not come with them, and the fact that they're 4 lug makes them attractive to all these mexican ricer thugs.

You can check with a Mercury dealer to see if your car orignally came with the keyless entry. If so, you should do what Bennett9000 did, just buy one cheap on Ebay and program it yourself. Its pretty easy.

me and my dad were under my hood one night when i was messing with my air box and he pressed someting on the frame towards the left hand side of the car looking at the engine bay i think its right behind the light, but the 'alarm' went off we kept pressing the button and setting it off, it was pretty funny. also as far as i know the cougar is kinda a hard car to steal, meaning you need to have the right coded key to pretty much do anything. but like caenus said if some one wants to steal your car bad enough the will find a way to do it. smoothcougar8, if you go to the dealer, they can cut you another key, but you will have to program it yourself, check your owners manual to find out how to program a key, however if you just get 1 key cut then your old key will not start the car, it will unlock it but will not start the key cause you not only programed a key, you also reprogramed the computer to accept that key.
