View Full Version : Dimming lights?

I finally got my subs hooked up when my bass hits the lights dim very lightly. It's so light that you'd have to look for it to notice it, but I've heard it's common among 99 cougs for the alternator to so. Is there anything I can do to help out the alternator?
thanks!

This has to be the most asked question on this board... yes, you can add a Yellow Top Battery or a Cap, but both aren't going to solve the problem, just mask it. If you want the lights to stop dimming, replace/rewind the alternator.

I have the yellow top and it really didn't help that much. I'm installing a capacitor soon though I'm gonna see what happens. You can tell if a cap will help by looking at how your lights dim. If they dim at the beginning of a bass hit but quickly brighten up again, you need a cap or a better battery. If they stay dim throughout the bass note you're gonna have to rewind your alternator

Or use better power wires(bigger ones). Also ground your battery, and the alternator. that should stop it if not. You can also run aa better power wire from the Alternator back to the battery.

I hear you talk about this a lot in these threads... do you mind elaborating on this stuff? Grounding a battery/alternator?

Get a power cap. It really helped my dimming light problem.

I do not mind explaining. Matter of fact it would probably take up several hours if not longer, but why?
This has been covered so many times, every board, every discussion regarding a CAP, BATT, WIRING.
Who is rightwho is wrong? Well OHMS LAW in my book.
The funny thing is, if I would say "it is ok to use caps, they will solve all the problems." I would be a good guy. Nope not me I say "they do not solve a problem with dimming lights", that makes me a bad guy. That's ok.
What better biger or thicker wires do, they CUT resistance(our enemy). I am not going into the detail.
Instead, I will give you some links, and read it for your self.

Once you have read them, we can discuss it to the detail.
Then you will understand what a CAP, BATT, WIRES do.
Sounds cool to me.
