I've had a set of SVT heads with cams sitting in my room for a while now just waiting till I can afford to get them worked and put into my car and I'm wondering how much work is involved in taking out the cams now and switching them with the stock ones? I have some basic knowledge and experience with engine work (installed svt upper and lower, intake, optimized throttle body, and some other stuff), I have access to an auto shop where I can work for free, and I'm not afraid to try it, I'm just wondering what exactly I'm getting myself into if I do? What do I need, what's required, and how long might it take? Is this something that's reasonable for me to attemp to do or should I just go to a shop or just wait even? Thanks for any info or insight you could offer me.

It's pretty easy once you get access to the heads but that's the key, getting access. You have to drop the engine to get to the one located in the back of the engine compartment.

hadn't thought about that, could be a problem. There's no way to get around that?

don't mean to hijack ur thread, but I don't know much about engines, and my friend is trying to sell me cams and I need to know whats else I need to do/buy in order to make them fit ( i don't know anything about them, except that he wants to sell me them for 150.00 and i'm assuming they're used)

it might be possible to swap the cams out while the engine is in the car. Is it recommened? No. It would probably take you longer, and with more headaches, to do it that way.
If you guys are going to do this just get a copt of the Ford tech CD!!! It details every step-by-step instruction to perform every service job on the engine, including this.
don't be scared though, just be prepared, have the right tools, a solid plan, good instructions (think Ford CD...) and go for it. With a friend, I suggest, tipping the engine of the the bay is much easier with two people if your pulling from the top, which the only way to do it without huge hydraulic lift...
but think about this!!! if you have to pull the engine anyways GO WITH A 3.0L. Sell you SVT UIM/LIM, make some money, get a shortblock 3.0L, install it with the SVT heads/cams and VROOM

That's what I plan to do actually, I just don't have the money to go all out with it right now which is why I was wondering if I could just try and throw those cams in there for the time being. I guess I'll just wait and do it all at once, no point in going throw that much effort for a few extra hp's. We'll see what happens though, thanks for the replies.

it can be done while the engine is still in the engine bay....
however you will have very limited room to work with.... and well since everything needs to be clean on the inside of an engine, considering the limited room, and the fact that an engine bay usually carries some dirt and grime with it... pull it out and do it in a clean environment.....
