Has anyone replaced their catalytic converter with a straight through pipe and if so, how much louder was it?
It's common place to do this in the UK and when MOT time comes, which is the annual car check, you just put the cat back on.

I have heard of people removing their cat and saying it was a bad idea!! That they lost a lot of TQ and maybe some HP. PM DV6Cougar about it, he did it!!

riiiiight.
I did this and felt extra power throughout the rev range... especially on top. I dynoed a GAIN of 4 horsepower with a gutted cat. Now I have straight pipe and the car feels even quicker.
It doesn't make the car too much louder during normal driving, but when you nail the gas, EVERYONE will know...

MileHighCougar-- you are right in that gutting the cat being a bad idea. The reason that people lose HP this way is because the exhaust gas goes from a small pipe into this big gutted cat, causing it to slow done. However this is not the case in this thread. If the cat is replaced with a regular pipe and it is the same size as the rest of the exhaust system, it will yield more HP because there will be less restriction. I had my cat taken off a few weeks ago just to experiment. It may be a tad louder, but nothing really noticeable. I am waiting for my Y-pipe to get shipped, so maybe it will become louder when that restriction is addressed.

Thanks guys
Now I just need to find a place that sells the pipe or I'll most likely have to have one custom made.
It's so difficult finding any parts for the Cougar over here, even the Ford dealers have to order everything in as a special, they don't even stock the 6W side light bulbs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't YoDude sell a Y-pipe with a removeable cat? That sounds like something that might work for this individual...
