i've been racking my brain on how to ask this question directly, yet specific enough but i think i may have to just be direct and simple. if one were planning to turbo their cougar...is there really a point in doing a 3.0 swap (either direct or hybrid)? if i were to swap in a lincoln LS 3.0, turbo it...right off the bad i would have roughly 350 horses at the wheels (please correct if im wrong) but it would cost around 9-10k. would it be just as effective to turbo a 2.5 and tune and beef up internals until it reaches 350hp, and less expensive, less down time etc...and will the 2.5 hold up as well, or would you also have to beef up the internals of the 3.0...for the sake of argument at 350 horses.
if there is already an answer to this somewhere else i didn't find (i did search!), do post a link. and mods if you think this would be better in the 3.0 forum transfer away :D
thanks,
jordan

Hell if I had the money, I'd drop the 3 liter in AND turbo it. But if you wanna keep the 2.5 and turbo it, I'm sure there's more you can do to the engine to beef it up to 350HP. I don't know if it would be less expensive, it might. But I'd definitely get the 3L engine before anything else, so that way there's always more room for improvement. Remember: There's no replacement for displacement

With the prices of new and used 3L engines it's easily cheaper to build a mild 3L with FI to reach that goal than it would be to build a wild 2.5 to reach the same goal. The problem with either the SC kit or the turbo is that you'd be pushing the outer limits of the compressor trims in either of those kits to do it. To get there easier, get a 3L Taurus engine, upgrade the trim on the Vortech and use a 2.9x" pulley, then get an after cooler unit. OR, get the turbo kit, modify it to accept a t3/t4 hybrid turbo (the t28 is to small for the 3L to reach that HP goal IMHO) and you would be close.

With a 3.0L, IMHO, I'd head for twin T28s. Less overall boost per unit, but (theoretically) faster buildup.
Might also keep the car more responsive to input, rather than having a pedal masher.
Dunno.

Twin T28's would be nice, but with no kit available, and more importantly no traction available, twins would be a waste of money and time. T03/T04 hybrid would be much easier to build and to drive.
how hard would it be to change out the t28 for a t03/t04 hybrid, what would you have to change? Do you think there would be a lot of turbo lag with this set up? Would it be an ungodly amount of money? Sorry for all the questions, its just I keep hearing about this option and it sounds pretty tempting! ;)

should be nearly a direct swap... i'm not sure how much different the turbo housings are but it shouldn't be that much different, and if there are any, i would imagine just minimal plumbing work would be needed to have it accomplished....

You would really want bigger exhaust pipes feeding it, but you could get by with a flange change, oil feed fitting change and some very basic adaptation to make the T03/T04 fit properly. You'd only need it on a larger engine anyway, so the torque drop from the larger turbo would be made up by having the larger engine. Of course you'd still need to get the correct compressor and exhaust trims within those larger housings. CFM mapping is critical to a custom turbo installation.
