what does it do?
what's a good one?
(pushing two 800 peak watt speakers)

...the point of it is to store power when amplifier has a shortage of power and needs that extra boost to run at max potential.
Helps the cars electrical system balance out the drain from battery, alternator, and amplifier.

Plain and simple.

Its the most hated by some and most needed by others. Depends on what you think is right for your setup.
Best type depends on how much $$ you have because they range from 50$ to 250$ and then some.

Mine in current use is a pair 1.f Rockford fosgate's which are only running a 250 watt amp and a pair of 450 watt subs....so its just mostly for show in my case-

I noticed a good post a while back about determining whether a cap will help your system, and it works:

Find a CD with a bass note that hits for about 5 seconds. Turn the bass up so that you know the lights in the car will dim. If the lights dim at the beginning of the bass note, but recovers to full brightness prior to the end of the note, then you need a cap. If the lights dim for the entire duration of the bass note, then the cap isn't going to do a damn thing for you. In the first case, the cap will bridge the gap for power draw, but in the second case, the alternator isn't putting out enough power to sustain the note.

Only get a cap if the case is number one, otherwise you're wasting your money.

so true....most spl applications/db drag style setups...you will never see a capacitor....I use to run caps until I started competing (gained when removed) and they hurt your system performance more then they help when it comes to competing....but for one who isn't competing and looking for a cheap way of lessening the strain on your system...then they are ok....but I'll never use caps again, I'd rather just beef up my electrical system to a solid 14.4v system.

Sinister that is very well put.
You know I have tried to state that in a nother thread somewhere, why db drag remove the caps, but then again why bother right?
Anyway well said.....

See I'm not into the competition part of sound systems, just personal pleasure. So if a cap will help stop my dimming headlights (which annoy me very much), then I'll be happy.

you know Mike I tried, to stay out of this post. but simply could not resist. it is the thought that counts right? Anyway if by installing the cap will make you happy, then be it. Be as happy as you can be. and enjoy the new year coming up.
