I have a bone stock '99 V6 and on occasion, especially when temps are low, there will be a loud howling coming from the intake airbox. If I give it some gas, then it stops. It's almost like the engine is venting back through the airbox.
Anyone had this problem before? Wonder if I should check the PCV valve??

Try the IAC Valve.. very common problem.. dealer is supposed to fix it under warranty. Mine is doing it too, but i havent had time to get it into the dealer..

Yea it's not your intake dude. I have the same problem too but never got around to fixing it. I can deal with it I guess. Anyone know if this is a difficult thing to fix..like if I order the part can I do it myself?

Yeah, that's your IACV. It's bolted onto the upper manifold, right on the firewall on the drivers side of the engine, right on the corner. Mine howls like a foghorn every morning. These things are garbage. If you can handle the noise, forget about it. It's not hurting anything. It may freeze in place eventually, which will cause you to have trouble idling. At that point, replace it. Having a '99, you are probably out of warranty unless you bought the extended.
As far as being easy to fix, the manual says it's just 2 bolts and a wire. And be sure to get a gasket, too.
Dude, is that Screamin' Jay Hawkins?

no need to replace it...........
just take the old hose of and put a longer one on (about 3 1/2 to 4 foot)
3/4 inch heater hose works great

Mine just started doing this last week when it was very cold out, it's in the garage and it echoed and scared the hell out of me. I just hit 36,000 so my warranty is done. I will try the hose fix and see if that solves it. I'm so glad I checked here, you guys are great!

look at the "i think my iac valve is going out" post
some one has a picture there of how to do it
you wrap it around the intake tube once (over then under), then go towards the strut tower, then to the iac valve.
if u dont like the way it looks you can always put the old one on when its not cold outside
