View Full Version : Fitting a rear spoiler

Got a rear spoiler to fit, and it's supposed to be bonded on. It came with some Betalink K1 adhesive, but I'm a bit wary of just gluing such a heavy lump of fiberglass to the back of the car. Anyone else got a bonded spoiler, or any recommendations for glue to use? I'm guessing the Betalink stuff is up to it, but it's..well..GLUE, you know?
Unfortunately, the feet of the spoiler are too far apart to catch the box section of the tailgate to bolt it (even though there are threaded inserts moulded in to the fiberglass) and I dont really want to bodge a few stainless fixings through the edge of the tailgate either. Yes, I know I should have checked it before I bought it, but it was mail order and anyway I ate paint as a child, ok?

I'm sure it'll be fine with the adhesive supplied, just make sure you really roughen the mating surfaces first. How big is the contact area?

I did a quick search for that adhesive and it seems to be very popular and I read, probably the best automotive adhesive available.

I'm suprised the threaded inserts are too far apart to hide them in the box-section?

The contact area is roughly 40 sq. cm a side, pretty big i suppose. Couldnt find anything on the web about the glue, just a bunch of stuff in German that didn't really tell me what I needed to know (maybe my bad translation was a factor there) Anyway, now I'm feeling fairly confident that I won't be beheading any following bikers with a flying spoiler, here goes...

If as I suppose, you're doing it in your garage I would put a heater on if you've got one, it will make the adhesive cure better. Don't use a gas heater though because they give off too much moisture.

Just didn't trust the glue on its own, but your spoiler looks about as big as mine so I guess it should hold. At least there aren't any holes to rustproof and paint. Can't be bothered to de-wax the tailgate right now, so I'll get on it tomorrow and leave it overnight before driving round. Thanks for all the info.

Somehow, Deadlock, I've a feeling you'll be using your rear view mirror a lot tomorrow. :hitit:

Maybe I could fit one of those swivel chairs from a Galaxy and keep spinning round for a peek....:cover:

Right, done that! Anyone else planning on using a bonded spoiler, if the instructions that came with the adhesive tell you to spread an even layer all over the base of the pedestals, don't do it. Not even a little bit. If you do, be prepared to spend the next half hour cleaning off all the black glue that oozed out all over your tailgate and starting again. Not that I was that stupid, right? :flushed:
A phone call later, I found out that the thing to do is put a quarter inch bead of the stuff down the centre of the pedestal, stopping half an inch short of either end. I know it sounds obvious to everybody else except me. Any stray globs come off easily with a spot of lighter fluid on a kitchen towel. Fortunately, so do the great swathes of the stuff that you got all over your tailgate by following the instructions.
