I have the option to purchase a Ford 6 CD-Changer. I currently have fitted a 6000CD RDS E.O.N model which says on it that it is CD Changer Compatible. Now the question is if I was to purchase this Changer would I need to buy any additional hardware or would the existing HU operate the changer?

I'm the same as Damo, i have the 6 cd unit in the boot and the 6000 HU in the car, if you press the cd button it starts playing the cd from the head unit, if you use the 1-6 buttons underneath, it plays the cd's from the autochanger in the boot

Have you got the changer yet and how much did Ford want. The reason I ask is that unless you intend to retro-fit the changer in the boot with the correct cover and cut outs, it maybe worthwhile looking into a changer from a known make (Alpine/Kenwood/Sony etc.) All good makes can be attached to the Ford 5000/6000/7000RDS units as there is a converter on the market that will link to the input format of the unit at about £30.00. The ford changer in the current market is comparatively large and for the money you will get a fairly poor unit against the mainstream completion.

If you haven't yet got your changer, I've got an Alpine S620 along with the converter which I took out of my last car. Its about 3/5ths of the size and has far better sound and changer speed. Its about a year old and I'd want 150 quid with the conv if you or anyones interested

I have a 6 disc changer, cabling and casings that came out of my previous car (Xsara coupe). I have been told by various dealers that there is no way that other changers fit the ford head unit, with or without converter, so i just bought a single alpine indash unit to use for now. If what you say is true, could you please let me know where i can get a converter or who to speak to about a converter as i live in Lincolnshire and the people i have spoke to here just want to sell me a whole new changer or complete units. I ideally want to put back in the original ford head and then fit my own changer.

Thanks......Gav.

As per my mail above the converter certainly does exist. It works on all three units as all it does is changes the pin configuration of the input to match Fords output. Its literally a 3x2 inch black box with a plug in for the changer and a short lead out with the ford connector on the end that you just plug straight in. Any reputable audio dealer who knows their stuff should either have one in or be able to get one. I got mine from a car stereo shop called Paragon in Braintree for around 30 quid. I know now even big Haldfords can get them and they should have a listing in store this is because they were going to get one for my dads Rover, however, they were more expensive than a dedicated car audio dealer which is no surprise.

I have spent the last couple of days chasing around and phoning around to try and sort my changer out, It turns out that i must have the only changer(Phillips) that will not work on the ford head units, but luckily a guy i spoke to has a mate who has a Sony 6 disc, brand new he has the lead to fit the ford head unit and will fit it for me, at a very reasonable price. So at least this time i have managed to fall on my feet!
Thanks for the reply UKRPG.
