View Full Version : Best Sub for My Setup? Help!

OK, here's what I got so far-
4 Alpine 5x7 SPS 5729 Speakers
1 Alpine MRP-F320 V-Power 5 ch Amp, 75W x 4 + 180W max
What I want to finish off my setup is a nice 10" Sub that can be powered by my amp, and is cheap. So far, I have heard many good things about the Kenwood KFC W2505 (or 2502) 10" (only bad thing ive heard is that it has a foam rim, not rubber). Will this work? Will it sound good?
Also, some general questions-
What does RMS stand for/mean? The Kenwoods RMS is 150
It's max wattage is 600 - what exactly does this mean? Will it sound its best with 600W powering it?
The frquency range, from XHz to YHz, measure how deep the bass it can hit is, correct? The bigger the range, the better?
Thank you in advance, any help is appreciated!!

RMS is actally" root means square" ....But in a simpler way of explanation but not actual termonology--you could think of it as a measure of minimal wattage, or the lest amount of wattage to run to have decent sound-
And max wattage is just that, but you wouldnt want to max out the sub- A 150 rms with 600 watts max would run clean with a 200 watt amp. If you want more than get a bigger amp, but most subs will never get up to max wattage unless your in competition or just want to blow a coil for kicks-
Your amp will run the entire setup but the drain from all the speakers running together will put a good load on the amp,Id reccomend a seperate amp for the sub and use the 5th channel for a mid-bass woofer, but then were getting into a different kind of setup with muliple sound fields which most peolpe do not belive in...so whatever works for you!

Q. Kenwood KFC W2505 (or 2502) 10" (only bad thing ive heard is that it has a foam rim, not rubber). Will this work? Will it sound good?
A. Yes it will work perfectly fine, but the foam usually does not last as long as the rubber one.
Q. What does RMS stand for/mean?
A. Root means square. Basically the continues power that it can reproduce with out any strain.
Q. It's max wattage is 600 - what exactly does this mean? Will it sound its best with 600W powering it?
A. The most possible amount of power that it can take, under normal conditions. And since it is the most it can take, it will not sound it's best for continues periods of time.
Q. The frquency range, from XHz to YHz, measure how deep the bass it can hit is, correct? The bigger the range, the better?
Lets break this one down. Into several parts.
1. Q.The frquency range, from XHz to YHz
A. Just like you posted the frequency that the driver as capable of reproducing.
Q. how deep the bass it can hit is, correct?
A. That will depend on other factors. Like: what kind of a box will be used, youre amplifier that the subwoofer will be using, and the crossover point that will be set for the that box..
Q. The bigger the range, the better?
A. usually in car audio, there are crossovers to divide the work for the drivers (speakers).
And one would rather get it to work in the narrower range then the wider one.
Here are some of the examples for you. under normal conditions.
Subs - 90hz and down
mid bass - 90hz - 250hz
mid range - 250hz - 6000hz
tweeter - 6000hz and up
That way all of the drivers will cover or over lap the whole spectrum (frequency range) of the audio from 20 – 20000
Hope this help and answers some of questions for you.
