View Full Version : Revving for no reason?

Hi

I bought a Cougar V6 about 2 months ago (Manual transmission) and have had a few problems with it - one that seems to have just gone away is a few mornings in a row it simply would not start but now is fine.

However the latest problem is even more curious - Driving down a dual carriageway at about 60 if I slip it out of gear and take my feet off all the pedals it can rev to about 4000 rpm all by itself. Additionally it can do varying degrees between this in normal around town driving - it definitely is not right and you can look a little stupid pulling up at the lights with the thing buzzing at about 3000 rpm.

I have a suspicion that there is some engine management issues - however when I first took delivery of the car it had to go straight back due to a valve on the manifold breaking (not sure what one?) and the ECU needing resetting due to very bad pre-ignition sounds.

Has anyone out there experienced any similar issues? - I have a limited warranty time left and am sure that the dealer will put it in to its local non-Ford garage who will say that they cannot find anything wrong with it (it will probably meet their basic test of starting, moving and stopping!! - therefore cannot be anything wrong!!!)

Look forward to hearing any advice you can offer me

I had the exact same problem and believe it or not it turned out to be the rubber car mats i had bought.
The mat was sliding under the throttle pedal and jamming it.
I cut a notch out of the mat where it was jamming and have never had the problem since.

I'm afraid I haven't had any of those problems and cannot really help you but our friends across the pond may well be able to....try putting the question in the problems section, they might well have some answers for you.....if you scroll through the navigation thingy on the top right, you'll find it there...

Trouble with complex engines it could be anything from throttle position sensor to ECU. I'd suggest taking it to dealership and plugging it into machine. Even that may not work if it is an intermittent fault but I would have thought best place to start.

The fault is consistent and relates to the speed of the car - almost like the speedo is connected to the rev counter (but isn't!!) does not rev up when stationary therefore I have to assume it is something that is controlled by something that has a feed off the cars speed? (ECU?)

When your car is plugged into the diagnostic machine it will read not only current faults but also any that are recorded in the ECU memory. Hopefully it will show which sensor is playing up.

It could be This (http://www.fastcougar.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=14&threadid=28370&highlight_key=y&keyword1=throttle%20)
I thought that was my problem at first.
I would try driving for a week without a floor mat first tho
