Can anyone please tell me how much power the stock cougar speakers can handle? I need to know soon because I am buying new speakers off of ebay.

25w on the speakers, 1000w (IIRC) on the wires

Ummm.....oops. I guess I shouldn't turn my stereo all the way up.... But anyways, I've got a 60W alpine head and the speakers go up fine to half volume (pretty loud) without any distortion. The SoundAdvice installers basically said that you can stick most head units (avg 45-60W) on without being forced to get new speakers. They warned against using em with an amp or anything more powerful. I'm planning on getting some pioneers soon, anyhow, though....

If you are buying new speakers, then why does it matter what the stock speakers can handle. I assume if you are bying new speakers then you should be buying a new radio also. If not then you are wasting your time buying new speaker (unless the old ones are blown). you should configure you speaker to the radio. You should match the speakers to radio based upon the radios ohn and wattage rating.

I was using a 220w sony stereo with my stock speakers for a while...turned it up all the way and nothing bad happened, just a little distorted sound

220 /4 channels = 55 W / channel Peak... the RMS is more like 25W.. There a 60W /per channel you might need to be a little more careful with the stocks...
Then again does anyone really think that ANY stereo manufacturer could really fit a 4-Channel @ 55W per into the little head unit when if I tried to buy that much in a regular amp it's about 3x bigger.

I just replaced my stock speakers with Kappa 6.1 components and I am still using my factory deck. I have a seperate amp running the Kappa's. Sound is great but I wonder sometimes if I would get even better sound from a new deck.

I hate that manufactures do that ****. Just be honest and state what the real rms rating of the head is even if it isn't all that impressive. If those rating were correct nobody would have to buy an amp except to run subs.

hey DgnZ what iam talking about is keeping the face of the stock radio and just take the old speakers out and replace em with new ones.. same factory grill face thingy but new speakers... i wanna take the side panel off and just replace the speakers then replace the side panels
EDIT: hey Mac i was wonderin if you can place the amp under the back seats to hide it... instead of the trunk.. cause i use the trunk alot to carry larger items

i dont think you can fit an amp under the back seats safely. even if there is room, it'd get really hot up against the foam of the seats, then poof!!

There isn't any space to safely mount anything - I tried mounting a GPS head unit under the seat... and it didnt clear (and it's much smaller than an amp...

is there any place where i can hide the amp.. and back to my original question? how much of a pain is it to take the side panels off and replace new speakers with the Kappa 6.1 speakers.. and cost??
