View Full Version : Weird boot carpet + trip computer + CD

Hi all,
I'm considering buying a '99 V 2.5V6, but there are a few points I hope someone can help me with...
1. The boot carpet seems to be shaped on the driver's side towards the back, so that there is a gap about 5 inches wide and the boot floor can be seen. Any ideas why? It looks like it was manufactured that way rather than someone taking a pair of scissors to it.
2. The Select button on the Trip Computer seems to be stuck in. Presumably it is supposed to stick out like the Units and Reset button, and have the same sort of travel? This one is virtually flush with the bezel and gives intermittent/delayed response when cycling around the computer parameters.
3. Also, it is an X-pack car with metallic paint and leather, but doesn't have the CD autochanger, just the CD6000 single CD player (which incidentally doesn't want to load a CD). The dealer says that 'some cars came like that'. I don't know if the specs changed, or has someone nicked the autochanger? Where is it supposed to be fitted? In the boot?
Thanks for any info you can give.
Ivan

The CD autochanger is about 5 inches wide and mounted on the boot floor at the drivers side . Yup . Also, not sure about everyone else's X-Pack, but mine has the 7000 audio unit with a tape slot.
Seems odd the select button being jammed in on the trip computer. The service warning light is turned off by holding in the select and units buttons on here; not saying thats why it's stuck in, but I can't think of another reason why anyone would want to hold the select button in for long enough for it to become jammed. But then I'm just a suspiscious little sod by nature.
These two small points, plus the fact that the dealer is trying to work a flanker on the CD changer, would be enough for me to either walk away, or at the very least get an AA inspection on the car. There are plenty of nice, straight cars out there, check out the Autotrader website (http://www.autotrader.co.uk) for a good localised search facility.

Sounds a bit odd to me....agree with Deadlock, look elsewhere.
Is your profile wrong or do you really live in the States?!
Ford Cougar X-PACK consists of Leather seats, front seat heating and 8 way power adjustment to the drivers seat, metalic paint and a 6 cd boot mounted autochanger. If you have this model the options available were RDS 6000 Radio / single cd unit, electric sunroof and heated front screen.
So you have the optional head unit installed, but the space in the boot is were the autochanger should be, the trip computer control shouldn't be like that and should be replaced. The dealer is telling you lies when he says 'some cars came like that' he just wants to make a sale. Go elsewhere is my advice, i hate car salesmen who think they know it all.
:)I agree with everyone else, walk away. If the CD was factory spec/option, did they also choose to have half the boot carpet missing??? Someone has done a dodgy swap, or something. I got an RDS 7000 with my x-pac, I wasn't aware a single CD was an option! A stuck in button should be sorted by the seller and he should not try and fob you off with some crap!

Thanks for all the prompt responses - very helpful.
I think I shall be having some serious words with this so-called dealer.
No, I'm not in the US, must have missed that bit of the profile setup.
Thanks again.
Ivan.

I wouldn't go back!
If they are not prepared to explain the simplest of things then how will they cope with aftersales?!
Plenty of others to choose from!
What are you looking for?

I'd be wary of this one even if it were a grand below book; come to think of it, the thick end of a grand's worth of kit is missing/broken, and that's just from a quick once over on the forecourt. At a guess, the dealer will be asking around 7-8k for it, unless it has very high miles on it, which gives you a good choice of cars with FSH, decent miles and working kit. Don't suppose you want to name and shame the Arfur Daley wannabe?

I know a couple of people that have had a stuck selection button on the computer,
it usually happens in cold weather and costs £50 to fix by main dealer.
My X-pack has the 6 cd autochanger with it too!

Hi Ivan2, agree entirely with what the rest of the folks are saying. I am wondering if the car has been broken into and the autochanger nicked and the cd player and trip computer damaged. My cougar came from a ford direct dealer so it had a good warranty. As it turned out I needed it cos the engine and gearbox both needed changing! Ford have been really good so I can heartily recommend getting a Ford Direct car.
A local dealer in Kent has a couple in stock at the moment but just look around using Auto trader on line or do a Google search.
Any way best of luck with the car when you get it.
