The svt focuses only have 180 hp right? with the mods your running you should take him without much effort I would think.

stock vs. stock the focus should win yes??? I think they have 170 hp, but obviously the weight will be different. they are 2770 lbs...but they only have 145 tq. So in the quick sprint should the cougar should win???
Have you guys read about this thing...redline@7,300rpms and max hp@7K, a totally different animal than regular

Good kill. IIRC C&D got a 15.7 in the 1/4 out of it. And yes, they have 170HP.

Yeah, they have 170 hp. But what interested me was the six speed and the weight. The car is nice though, w/ 17" wheels and a lowered stance. It is a Ford so i cant bang it to much. Like to see what response it has to upgrades! I am still trying to sell mine right now. Even though i just bought a new Street Weapon front end. Thanks!

Man, I'd think that at 170 horsies, they have squeezed everything they can get out of that poor little Zetec. Short of FI, they probably don't respond well to bolt-ons...

The problem with them is that the six speed that they have is pointless, the gears are so tall you cant stay in the powerband!! the new Focus RS in Europe went back to the 5 speed!!

Somehow I doubt this is true. The reason that they went w/ the 5spd is that the MTX-75 is a stronger unit than the 6spd found in the Focus SVT. With the power output of the RS, Ford was forced to go with the 5speed for longevity's sake.

Yes, but so do honda motors. Those little rubberbands are already wound to the max but still respond well to bolt ons. The SVT team did alot of work on not only the heads but also the bottom end. Sport compact and motortrend had nothing but good things to say about the 6-speed, but i also agree that it is kind of pointless to have it on that little 4 cylinder (gear ratio wise)!

sad but true actually! The COLD air intake for the SVT ford only adds 5HP to the wheels and 2.5 for shortram!
Our cougar aem shortram intake gains 8.5 Hp to the wheels.

I am quoting from Jan 03 issue of SCC: "Worst Feature: Gearbox. Sure the shifter's great, but the gear ratios are way too tall. If you can break every speed limit in California in second gear, what are the other four gears for?" Page 90. So you can doubt it all you want but that comes from a pretty reliable source!!

What does SCC's driving impression have to do with the relative strengths of the transmission components? And secondly, since the RS was designed before this article, what does it have to do with the conversation? There's a wider spacing between the MTX-75's gears. Ford didn't choose the MTX-75 for the RS because it dropped the revs more between shifts and made the car slower...they did it so the damn thing wouldn't break all the time. SCC's driving impression of the 6spd is irrelevant. The six speed will keep you in the powerband more effectively than the 5 speed, but it's a more fragile unit. Ford made the compromise for the sake of reliability. All SCC's article does is complain about 0-60. There's more to performance than that.
6spd ratio 5spd ratio
1st 12.7:1 13.1:1
2nd 7.7:1 8.1:1
3rd 5.7:1 5.5:1
4th 4.6:1 3.9:1
5th 3.8:1 2.9:1
6th 3.1:1

Well considering this topic started about a drag race I think 0-60 is quite relevant! And what I said about the gears being too tall is true!! I never once made a comment about the reliablity of the the tranny!! I just think that it would have been better served with a close ratio 6 speed!! The MTX is that reliable anyways, so many people in here have had to have their trannys replaced!! I havent compared the gear ratios between the two so I cant comment on that! Anyways have a nice day!!
I shall. The quesiton we are discussing is why Ford put the MTX-75 in the RS. It was not gear ratios, since the 6spd's are superior, it was strength. This topic was discussed at length when the SVT Focus first came out.

Actually what was being dicussed was why the SVT was so slow. I could careless why the RS recieved the 5 speed, well that is until they actually have them for sale in the US. I would have to say that you are probally right that the six speed wouldnt hold up to the Hp number the RS produces but all that said the gearing in the SVT is too tall!!

If Sport Compact Car is to believed in their quote of Ford officials. The Focus RS is not going to be coming to the US.
.
Ford is adamant that there's no place for the RS brand in the United States. A spokesman claimed the rally heritage means little to American customers and it would conflict with the SVT line-up.
Sad though as an RS with the new Cervini Mach 5 body kit would be a sweet car. Keep in mind I don't like the look of the Focus at all, but with that body kit and the RS's capabilities, I would definitely consider a Focus for a daily driver.

I agree as well, that would be amazing. Same thing with the Golf... I think the Golf Rs as well, it was and might still be the front page of teh vw vortex forums... Vw Vortex Forums... I think this is the right URL (http://www.vwvortex.com)... take a look..
4motion(almost all wheel drive system, ti's a great thing)... and 240hp! from there 1.8L turbo engine, full h and r cup kit!(that kit is so amazing, comes with everything from struts to the springs and everything in between but cost way too mcuh, like 1300 bucks!) and it has a Oe(i want to say ti's Oetium, but it's not, but ti has a nice body kit, someone care to correct me on what kit it is?) body kit and OZ Racing rims? something like that on the rim brand, i forget.

If you are to read the entire SCC article on the SVT, they complained about the tall gear around town. When they took it out on the road test, they loved it.
"The gearing that seemed too tall in town happened to fit our test road perfectly, letting us hang on to second gear where most cars needed constant shifting between second and third."

I did read the whole article and saw what you quoted but if they loved it so much why did they list it as the worst feature about the whole car? And it also says "happend to fit our test road perfectly" meaning for the road they were on its gearing matched the entry and exit speeds of the track they were on, not that it was good gearbox. The fact still stands to obtain the full potential of a pretty good engine the gearing needs to be shorter.
