i've read quite a bit about it and beyond the potential reliability issues...it looks like it'll be a monster..especially for the $$$$.

I don't remember if it was Super Street or sport Compact Car- one of them called is a Type R killer, which from those Import loving mags is a serious compliment

If it weren't a Neon, I'd consider trading the Cougar for one. But I've never cared for the Neon's styling, and I have concerns about it's reliability.

the SRT-4? comments?
It scares the Sh!t outta me...
just add it to the number of reasons why I'm NOT modding my engine yet... I don't have the money to compete with stuff like that.
Edit: BTW... did anyone see the 11second civic that looks 100% stock from the outside? (also in SCC mag)
that and the 10second 'k-car' vs 'supra' drag video which shows up here every so often.
scary stuff...

yeah, I think SCC actually gave it their "car of the year" award after they tested it...

Every car that has been coming out lately has had over 180 hp
Minivans with 240+ hp family cars running 14's make the hurting stop:cry:

I think its odd that Dodge would rate it at 215 HP (which is at the crank) and SCC would dyno it at 223 at the wheels that would be pushing 300 at the crank wouldnt it??

297 with a 25% drivetrain loss.
279 with a 20% drivetrain loss.
Pretty nice numbers.

If I was out shopping for performance #'s at an affordable price, this would be it, just cant beat it. But it's a freakin Neon...? Not raining on anyone's parade, just not my taste.
Gyger, where did you get the 2900lbs curb weight from? I checked out a few sites yesterday and saw an R/T at ~2500lbs. 400lbs more seems a little heavy for a Turbo kit?

Furious1: Dodge was doing a Q&A session with it's customers, about the SRT-4 and that was
the weight the Dodge engineer stated. Yup I just read it again 2900lbs straight from the Dodge
Engineers. It's funny because someone asked how it compared to the Focus zx3 and the engineer
said "what's a Focus ZX3" I laughed.

I'm gonna say 2900 is right, cuz SCC has it at 2,870 when they did the 8 car Shoot Out in the January issue.

For the power to weight ratio, that is some really sweet numbers. However neon's never appealed to me :( just the styleing and handling of them.

This is a step in the right direction for US auto makers. Small, fast, fun,( and Fugly)

I think the SRT is great for one simple reason. Competition breeds results. Simply by being made, Dodge will force others to push the limit in terms of horsepower to retain/gain sales.
It will hopefully start a classic horsepower war.
It will hopefully start a classic horsepower war.
O I sure hope so!!!!
It will hopefully start a classic horsepower war.
Aren't we already in one??? Just look at the hp on vehicles starting with 1999. Back then 200 was a lot, now it's run of the mill "oh you only have 200hp"... Just look at all the vehicles that are now putting out over 220.

I made a comment about this car in another thread, earlier. The exhaust on this car has no mufflers, only a resonator.
My personal experience with turbo charged cars, is the reliability of the turbo. No matter how much you try to take care of this car, you will stomp on it whenever you get the chance. I mean really, what would be the point of having a turbo charged car and not really use it.
I had a turbo Eclipse AWD and I consider myself to be fairly capable person in keeping up with oil changes and the likes. I even bought a Turbo timer for the car.
Long story short, I accumulated 168,000 miles on the car before the turbo gave out. Once the turbo goes, that car is a piece of CRAP. It took me 20 minutes just to get up to highway speed (55 mph). I stayed clear of the highway after that...
I find that manufacturers like Audi, now Mercedes will really put the money into buying quality materials for their cars. Do you really think that DODGE would do this for their NEON?
Don't get me wrong, I think car will kick butt and take names. In the end, I can see the turbo being fried in about 60K miles. Quality is just not really there...
That was the MAIN reason why I bought the Cougar. The price was EXCELLENT and it was a non-turbo car.
i dunno I would buy one... granted it is ugly but it is alot better than the other neons... Get an extended warrenty.

I hate Neons, just thought id get that out of the way. Dont worry, has anyone read up on the upcoming Focus SVT w/ the Mazda motor in it, cant remember the #'s but i think they were around 215 hp +!

Hey you can knock Dodge all you want about this car, but you know what....what has Ford or Chevy put out to represent US auto makers for the sport compact market? A 170 hp Focus, a 150(?)hp Cavalier? Like OrangeCat said, this is something that will hopefully give Ford/GM a wakeup call to start doing something with their cars.
As far as looks go..yeah it could be better, but I still think it's better looking than a WRX IMO

well actualy GM had sport compacts before all the rest of the big three did...with high HP N/A cars...and turbos cars on the drawing borads...but they had no compition.
i know i talk about the quad4 lots...but GM had this engine in 2400lbs cars back in 1987 ..with 160HP ...the 180 in 1989..then 190 in 1990 with the W-41s quad4s...the only other car company in the world trying to compete at the time was dodge..with the 2.2L turbo engines...they were making 170ish HP and 200lb-ft...but they were not reliable...they blew head gaskets about every 20 000kms turbos gave out in 50 000...because of poor turbo cooling.
GM planded a Turbo quad4 of which only a few were made...they were rated a 250HP and 250lb-ft....i have pics of it..the prototype car was an indy pace car. that came out in 1989..the turbo DSMs (Talon Eclipse Laser) came out in 1990 with 195HP...if GM built the turbo quad4 back then...and started compition back then..we all might be drivng 300+ HP cars now for cheap.
the only reason why the turbo quad4 wasnt made was because the corvette L98 of the time only made 245HP...and weighed over 3200lbs...the turbo quad4s were faster..even when they droped it the 190HP W-41s ..were faster than the F-bodies...at 14.7s stock only 350 TPI(L-98) fbodies could keep up.
i'd post W-41 a dn turbo quad4 pics...but this site is werid and i cant figure out how to post pics.

Since all of this is done to thwe neon, what after market ish wil be available....they say the turbo psi is already from 11-14psi, so performance wise what else can be put out of these engines.....@8.1:1 compression, could you put up the CR to 8.5:1 and still run that boost. Cuz i think they said it came with forged pistons from the factory??
ps
190hp for a sport compact back then....that's good....what happened during the mid 90's.

yeah, those motors had some pep... I saw a Beretta GTZ run a 14.7 with the quad-4 and some mods. But the coolest thing I've seen out of that generation was a Cavalier Z24 with the 3.1L turbo motor swapped out of a Grand Prix GTA... that car ran a 12.8.
As for now... my Beretta has to be the coolest winter beater I've ever had... 2.8 MTX, though... no quad.
Frank
12-12-2002, 02:30 AM
I don't think the new Neon looks bad at all... I would especially like it in a darker color. And this is a car that could probably push around 300hp at the wheels some simple mods.
The only thing I really don't like is the FWD aspect of it...
But still... :hitit:
Especially for $20,000!

For all of you who quoted SCC magazine... did you at least read the entire article?!?!?!
They mention in it more than once that the test vehicle WILL NOT BE the production vehicle.... Basically Dodge wanted to bring up some media coverage so they took NON-DETUNED version of the SRT-4 to SCC for testing... that's why the numbers are so high... when released for production however 215HP at the crank will be what it's rated and dynoed at.

I agree, just a big hoopla to get attention. Dont bang Ford man, Ever since ownership changed hands they have done nothing but great work. Take a look at the Lightning!! They are even considering putting a supercharger on the Focus and all wheel drive!! They are making the biggest step in the performance bracket than anyone. Give them two years max, and see whos on the top!!!

No warranty on competition parts? sounds bad to me!
Also the PSI isn't adjustable? what kind of crap is that! if im understanding correctly this car maybe difficult to tune.
Also the car has no mufflers..only a resonator. meaning that from the factory this car already has a pretty free flowing exhaust. hmmm
the car is also running up to 15psi. if you where to take a stock eclipse gst (8-9 psi stock) and bump the psi to 14psi and run only a resonator...the eclipse would be pushing upwards of 300hp. (all of these mods could be done relatively cheap too....and eclipses look a hell of alot better than the srt4 neon)
all in all: when the neon srt4 hits the streets its gonna have 215hp at the flywheel. and by then my cougars gonna be MEAN! i already beat a stock 94 eclipse GST (200hp @crank). Im not afraid of a neon. hehe
But one thing i definitely agree with is that the introduction of the SRT4 is going to put the competition at bay. other companies will be forced to compete. and who knows what the other companies will come out with....
(by the way Ford has a FOCUS-R in europe with 215hp Turbocharged from the factory...maybe we'll see it here in the states someday)

yeah there is a guy on gmpowertalk that runs a 13.4 all motor and stock bottom end in his 1990 Grand am with a quad4...another guy with a 150 shot on a stock engine doing 12.1s(and yes the engine will take that).i think i know who you talking about with the turbo 3.1L he is deffinately not on a stock engine..but still cool none the less.

FnF ha! crazy qoutes used in that movie haha... but this part is very true! if you have 11 second car and you can't drive it right, then what's the point? my buddies has a Malibu from 1987.... 6 people ran it at the track about 5 times each, he'd never run it yet either... first time out there, his buds were running about 12.0-13.0 with it... he goes give me on etry.... the sucak pulls an 11.3! amazing... Nice qoute ND4SPD :)
