race, kinda, didnt go the way i thought

ive had my licence for about 2 months, and last friday was the first time i had a chance at a real race.

me and 4 other friends just left the movies and were goin home. we talked about trying to find a race on the way home (we've tried before and didnt find one) and this time we found a red civic ex and thought this might be it. i pulled up next to him, and rode the same spped for around 5 minutes before he noticed. he didnt seem to pay attention so i sped off.

about 2 minutes later, i could see him behind me about 5 car lengths. he started flashing his lights, so now i was ready for the race, waited for him to get even with me so we could do this, and he flew by.

was i supposed to go when he flashed his lights even though he was that far behind??

Please don't take this the wrong way, but trolling for a race after having your license for 2 months most likely isn't a wise course of action.

God, I'm so tired of hearing people slam others just because they have an ATX. Believe it or not, their are some cars out there that an ATX can beat. Is it as fast as the manual? No. I don't think anyone has ever said that. But Christ, you people act like it's the slowest POS on the road. There really isn't THAT big a difference in the ATX and MTX. In fact, I'm willing to bet, that most of the people that bash the ATX have never ridden in one or even raced one. They just hear others saying it's slow, so they decide they'll do the same thing. And cougarXR7, your comment was pretty ****ty. This kid comes on and asks about something that he doesn't understand, and rather than answering his question, you decide to bash his car? What the hell? Not only that, but he said that he just got his license 2 months ago, so it can probably be assumed rather safely that he just got his car somewhere around 2 months ago also. So not only are you needlessly talking smack about his car, but you're talking smack about his BRAND NEW car, that he's probably pretty proud of. I personally would be pretty pissed off if someone said something like that about the car that I just got 2 months ago.

but man Catman... I had an ATX cougar before, and I have an MTX one now, and I can 100% agree with you on what you said... people bash the atx cougar like theres no tomorrow... and they all make it seem like the slowest POS on the road.
BUT REALLY people... it is NOT that bad... and this is comming from someone who HAS had both.

All you mtx people need to lighten up, don't think that you are king S***. and deffinatly... don't insult just be cause of their transmission, at least they HAVE a cougar right?

*I* am glad that cougFLIP at least didn't follow the crowd and buy a Honda civic or accord. :)

That's exactly true. And I completely agree with it. But that wasn't a harsh reply directed at his story. That was a harsh reply directed at his car. Two completely different aspects. That's why I said that cougarxr7's comment was ****ty. If he wanted to bash cougFLIP for racing like Y2Kat did, that's fine. In fact, I was thinking the same thing. But instead, his post was something completely off topic that I guess he meant to be funny, but only ended up as a slam at him and every other ATX owner on these boards. So don't sit there and throw the rules up at my face like I don't know them. Especially when they don't apply to the situation.

I never bashed the atx but will say i've raced 3 atx cougars so far..smoked em all...badly.

That my very well be true, but your car isn't exactly stock. Hell, you're running almost a full second faster in the 1/4 mile than a regular cougar. Besides, my point isn't that an MTX can't beat an ATX. My point is, that people are constantly talking smack about and ATX when it's really not needed or asked for. Whenever someone talks about how slow an ATX is, it pisses me off because I take it as a slam to my car. And I'm sure there are at least a few other ATX owners out there that feel the same. I know my car isn't the fastest thing in the world. But neither are ANY of the MTXs on here with a few exceptions (those with 3.0 liter swaps/forced induction). Our cars are not fast. They're relatively quick, but they're not fast by any means. That goes for the ATX AND the MTX.

ihear ya there but you did have the option of getting a MTX or a ATX. I personally don't like any atx...fast or slow..its not fun to me..i gotta like do more than drive a car ya know? as for my car not being stock..all i got is a intake and a pulley and i beat cars with the UIM,LIM etc..kept pretty much even with another members car that has all that and then some. again...i should add this to my thread..depends on that particular car

Actually, some people didn't have the option. It was either get an ATX, or don't get a cougar. And I personally, would rather have an ATX cougar than a five speed civic or any other generic import. I wanted a cougar, I needed a car, and ATXs were the only cougars they had on the lot. So no, some people didn't really have a choice in the matter. There's also the people who have to sit in rush hour traffic for 2-3 hours a day, in which an MTX wouldn't exactly be reasonable and definitely wouldn't be comfortable (can you say leg cramps?). There's a million different excuses or reasons why people got the kind of car they got. But whatever that reason may be, they sure as hell don't deserve to be made fun of for it. And they don't deserve to have their car bashed for it either.

thanks for getting my back on this catman, about having a choice on atx or mtx, i didnt have any say in it. and as for not racing so early with a licence, or with an atx, i dont think that because i dont have a mtx i shouldnt have fun and race, even if i know im going to loose, its just for the fun

its not so much about the having fun..its more about personally..i'm glad you own a cougar but wish you woulda got a ****box for a first car...lol..no i'm not your dad but i guarantee a crash will happen sooner or later..its more of you need to learn the limits of a car and your driving and a pretty new cougar aint the car to learn in.

First, don't race, it's bad... I have never done a single race in my life! :naughty:

Second, You can beat a Civic EX, pretty much regaurdless of if it has modds or not, unless they do something big, like drop in a B16 or B18, or turbo/super it. People, like me for one, get all upset that our cars are "slow". Are cars are not slow (well, maybe you I4 suckahs.. kidding, kidding =P ). Sure, we weigh a little bit more than the other guys, but when you're riding on like 127hp, the extra 300lbs wont save you from 170 American ponies crammed down your throat. Erm, where was I going with this..? Oh, you can win. People know this. Cougars are not like Civics, were the guy infront of you has an Type R badge and by some act of someone he actually has a Civic Type R. The majority of Cougars are V6s with power and people know it, and fear it. So, yes, he did do a ricer fly by. They know they cannot win so they just jet past you and don't try.

Third, I drive an ATX. I have intake, exhaust and diablo chip. I am fast. To the best of my knowledge, I'm the only modded Cougar in a two town radius around my town (except that guy in the black w/ white flames from Michigan that burned my friend and I have no idea who it was...), so I have never raced an MTX, but I do know I can beat Grand Am and Grand Prix GT and ATX V6 Firebirds and Camaros. ATX is not slow.

When I got my car, it was keep my Geo Prism or get an ATX Cougar. Take your pick. I also am planning to go to college in Chicago, where there is plenty of stop and... stop... traffic. Driving MTX is not fun.

And finally, if you are wanting to make your car faster, get a chip, then look into transmission work, such as a new torque converter. But do be careful. Racing can get out of hand really easily, and if you don't really get the good feel of your cat, you will get in trouble. Take it real easy, learn the car, then drive faster, but always drive smart.

my car before the Cougar was a 97 Civic Hatch Back DX...

I ordered a MTX 35th Cougar V6 MTX without a test drive...

when I was leaving the dealer I decided to test drive a cougar... they had an 2000 ATX on the lot with like 16000 miles for sale... so they let me take it out...

I asked the guy if he minded if i punched it to see what it got...

I was going maybe 20 MPH and floored it... waited... it down shifted and then I felt power...

I was like... IS MY MTX GOING TO BE LIKE THIS? he said No the MTX has much more power from the diff tranny...

from my little test drive this is what I concluded... that the ATX has a really realy really slow reacting computer to tell the car when to shift accel etc... but once it did you feel power...

my civic would react much faster then that but didnt have as much pick up once it did hit gear...

ya that's about right, it's never happened to me though... i drive a little more aggressive haha. It's cool though, it's not your fault. The guy was a classic rice driver. They think there cars can do anything... which they can't.... is your cougar automatic or manual? if it was auto might have been a godo race with a stick ex... if your mtx, you would have wailed on him as long as your new driving skills aren't too bad, learning can take time that's all....

good luck next time.... oh and see the red civic again.... you do your fly by, but give him the so called birdy while your at it :)

your car is autum orange...It is the most beautiful color of cougar next to the DSG. You got quite a rare color. Only made in 1999 and very few were made. I would trade my Black 99 for an autum orange in a heart beat...Also before I got rid of my first 99 cougar, I was running low 15's off the bottle and 14's spraying. And it was an automatic...so they can be very fast. And all of you MTX should race Frank, his Auto is probably the fastest on the board. And I would say he will give all of you a run for your money.

I drive in traffic everyday with my MTX and it is just second nature, I dont see any problem driving a MTX in stop and go you just put it in N and coast!! when the traffic gets going put it in gear and drive, quite simple actually!!

Yeah, it's no big deal. I've been driving my MTX Beretta in traffic all week. It's fun... I can just push in the clutch, coast, let it out a little to accelerate, rev the engine when I get bored... not a problem. It's better than just constantly riding the brakes in an ATX...
