dont know if you really have to pull the uim but it sure does make it real easy plus with the uim manifold pulled you can clean that and the lim that will do wonders!

I'm pretty sure the Chilton's manual has a step by step guide how to remove it. You need to torque the bolts to the proper specs and tighten them in the correct order. You may need to replace the UIM to LIM gasket, not sure. I know you have to when you switch to a SVT UIM but I dont know if thats because the old gasket falls apart, or if the holes are larger.
There is another thread about this in one of the other areas where people said doing the back plugs was a pain. However the people who removed the UIM to do them had no problems.

Definately need to remove the UIM unless you can move objects through aluminum. It sits right on top of the injectors and plugs.
Really not that hard, but like caenus says you need to get the exact torque specs when putting it back on (and the right order). You don't want to overtorque into an aluminum LIM.
What I did was remove all the bolts, then lift. Remove whatever was stuck to it and lift again. continue till it comes off. After that it's easy to get to the plugs and wires. I also recommend doing one wire at a time so you know which one goes where.

Its possible to install the wires without removing the UIM..
I would imagine that installing the plugs would be a little tougher..
But have read that its possible..
Anything has to be easier than my AstroVan, engine access inside the cab, back under the van to line up the plug.
back in the van to spin it in.. and back under to finish.(and thats just for one)

You DO NOT need to remove the UIM to change plugs or wires!!! That is a load of crap and they are trying to rip you off for extra cash!
You do need some nifty adapters for your socket wrench (extensions, wobble joint), but it can be done with some effort....Vish (LincolnGuy in the toronto forums) helped do mine cuz he's got mad amounts of tools ;) I don't see why any reputable shop who knows what they are doing would need to take your UIM off...

I got mine without removing the UIM also. I just used a spark plug socket and 6" and 3" extensions. It's kind of tricky getting the socket in and out of the holes, but it can be done. I also removed the coil pack (just a couple of screws) to gsin clearance. I don't know if it was necessary, but it made it much easier.
