Hey, all. My alternator is going to die any day now.
Those of you who have had yours replaced, did anybody use something other than a Ford/Motorcraft unit?
Anybody have theirs rebuilt? Where? What cost?
Thanks. I think I have to get this done within a week, or my ride will strand me.

Our alternator has been dying for a month now...we new it was going to go, but the last month it's gotten bad..not sure how much longer it'll last.
We are going to research getting an extended warranty, and hope it lasts till the 30 day wait they put you through. With everthing that keeps happening to it after we reached 36k we think the warranty is a good idea.
The other thing we've thought about is having it rebuilt, we think it'll cost around $100, parts? If it goes before we get the warranty.
If your in florida stage alternator is the best it cost me 250 to have mine rewraped
the are in pompano beach... may be they can ship you one

so nobody knows any local shops? guess i'll call around everyplace this weekend.
FordPartsOnline (http://www.fordpartsonline.com) offers the OEM alternator for $176.72, but I won't be saving much if it dies in six months. :(

Try calling machine shops, most all of them also do altenator rebuilds. It will be way better than the Ford one as in all likleyhood the parts being used to rebuild your altenator are vastly better than the oem parts in your stock one. Going price to have this done is roughly $100 but you will need to remove the altenator off the car and take it to them for the rebuild.

replaced my alternator today, since it finally failed on me thursday night. luckily i wasn't left stranded. took longer than expected because i had the wrong alternator.
some notes:
* few places stock these alternators, so if you know it's gonna fail, order one!
* the 2001 and 1999 alternators have different mounting points and pulleys, although the parts store will likely tell you that one alternator fits all model years.
* to determine which alternator you need, pop off your passenger side wheel and check if you have 3 bolts or 2 bolts through the alternator. [pictures to follow shortly]
* the shops all stock rebuilt Motorcraft alternators. if you want your own alternator rebuilt at a shop, there's a place called Arlington Armature in Springfield, VA. the guy quoted me $90-$130, but couldn't tell me how long it would take.
