Just got back from my dealer, where I shelled out over $500 CDN (about US$325) to have new front pads and rotors installed. And this after only 40,000 km (about 25k miles). WTF? Dealer says the pads are shot, and they could turn the rotors, but can't guarantee they won't warp due to insufficient metal left.

I've never owned a car where the rotors had to be replaced so soon. And it's not like I brake like a maniac, although I do mostly city driving, mostly in the suburbs.

Anyone else had to replace front brakes so soon?

It all depends on your driving style. If you are hard on your brakes, the pads will not last long.

As far as turning rotors....this is a debatable topic. Some people will tell you that you need them turned every time you change pads. Others, like me, will tell you that you only need to turn them if they are warped or badly scored. A light sanding is typically all you need.

I know people that can go 50k on one set of pads, and I know people who go through them in 15k...it all depends on driving style.

I also have a 2000 ATX and I got two recalls on mine...One was for the brakes...Mine also went bad after about 25,000 and I replaced them and two weeks later got the recall...They fixed the problem and 25,000 miles later it's doing fine, BRAKE WISE...Having hesitation problems now but at least it stops when I use my brakes...Cal your dealer and ask about the recall.

pads at 40 K i can understand ...but your disk's should be fine upto about 60,
its just an excuse to get cross drilled vented

ford actually puts quality disks on compared to other domestic companies cough cough GM cough.

take it easy on the brakes, you should be fine for another 10k, get them machine if you notice some vibration when braking then you need to go back in. and in go vented

First set of pads went on front at ~30K miles New rotors/pads went on all 4 corners at 50k.

I was so stunned when I heard them telling me I needed new rotors so soon, the thought of a cross-drilled rotor upgrade didn't even cross my mind (no pun intended). Oh, well, I guess I'll do it at 50k miles when these rotors are gone.

Just to clarify what I said in the original post, I've never had a vehicle where the rotors went so soon. For, example:

85 CRX - 50k miles on original rotors
96 Civic - 55k miles and still going strong on original pads and rotors
92 Mazda MPV - 60k miles on the original rotors

So it's obviously not my driving style.

Of course, they weren't Fords.

Should clarify that Eric also Autocrosses with his cougar... which would naturally lead to faster wear on the braking system.

Under normal driving conditions they should last much longer. I'm at 35K miles and I have plenty of padlife left in my brakes. Most likely the pads will last till 50K, rotors should last longer. If not, at least I can get rotors for cheap from my grandfather :)

First my driving style sucks, but I got 80,000 miles out of my previous car and the Cougar's only lasted to 32,000. I know there are alot of people who replaced theirs pretty early, but they were '99's, I don't know about the later versions.

Well I had to replace the pads on my Talon after 40K miles. The right front pad was completely gone, and I had to have the rotors turned to fix the area where the pad grinded.

All well. Every car is different. My Mom's car, the brakes lasted till 80K. Dad's van, 50K.

All cars are different, along with driving styles.

I also just had the same problem, 26,000 miles. Dealer told me that's average for the Cougar, between 25,000 and 28,000 miles. I figured my problem was mostly short trip driving, until I did a search for brakes:disgust:.

I just had mine replaced the other day at about 23k. They were squealing one day and next day they were grinding something wicked and the rotors were shot. They didnt give me any time at all!! But I do my one work so it was $100 with a shop discount. Not to bad.

AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO GOT A RECALL ABOUT THIS???????

I got a recall card in the mail about the disk brakes wearing out early b/c of a faulty break line or something...dealer fixed it for nothing around 20,000 miles and now I'm at 54,000 and no problems at all.

UPDATE!

Well, after spending big bucks for new front pads and rotors, I am not a happy camper.
There's now a vibration every time I brake (there was none before), and the stopping power is nowhere near what it was before. I know it takes a few hundred miles for the pads to get broken in, but this is ridiculous.

I guess it's back to the dealer again.

any way someone can scan in the recall card and post it here? My dealer said he "was not aware" of any recall, yea right.

That is because no such recall exists.

Yup!
Right around 26,000 and again at 62,000!

Although, I do drive a bit fast...
Safely, of course! ;)
