Well, actually, Dev was, but I was riding shotgun. ;) jjennings and muppet killer(mprtklr) were in town taking care of some business, and we went out with them. I gotta tell ya... jjennings car is a BEAST. :) And not only that, he claims to be a bad driver but still made Dev's car look like it was standing still.

(Oh yeah, muppet killer's tibby is pretty fast too ;))

Only if I had good tires, and could get some traction!!!

I still think the 3-liter of doom would burn even high-traction tires easy. Maybe some slicks. ;) Break down and buy some mickey thompson 'cheater slicks'. ;)

Right now, it's high 13's. But with some of the mods that will go on it the second it gets back from ???????? It has a bunch of mods waiting to go on it, and it should take it to the mid to low 13's.

I think Jimmy needs to hire a pro drag-racer to do two runs for him so he can show the low 13/maybe maybe please?-high 12 timeslips the car SHOULD be worthy of! Come on NECO, let's pitch in and make it happen! ;)

Alright, I will say since nobody else will.
The answer is 90 horsepower.

I knew it. Just as I expected, by detuning the car more it will actually go faster. WTG! :)

Yes. He replaced his engine with a Harley V-twin..
Saves quite a bit of weight!

many people would be surprised with how much power can be wrenched out of these Duratec engines WITHOUT having to go forced induction.

So many people have been messing their shorts over the turbo kits, when the 3L option has been around for almost a year or more.... 250 crank HP is a piece of cake out of the 3L, 300HP is a little harder, but still relatively easy....350hp is possible with aggresive cams and engine management....

I havent been following the turbo discussions that much, but I think the 3.0L NA route is a very valid alternative......

But will the 3L running at 300 or even just 250hp idle alright? Will it get really horrible gas mileage?

jjennings
07-11-2002, 01:24 AM
For gas mileage. On the trip to Hayward, I got 39mpg. Around on the streets I get 22-24mpg.

As far as the idle goes, well that's a different story. At the stock idle location (i believe 750rpm's) it drove me insane to sit inside the car. I since have adjusted the idle up to 1000 rpm's and it smoothed it out quite a bit.

The secrets?? Well there aren't that many secrets. The main secrets are the cams and heads. The near future secrets will be the headers and engine management.

how did you adjust the idle?

Yes...some figures to keep an N/A motor would be great....I love turbos...but if I can generate alot of power without one, I'm all for it....

For less than the price of the turbo kit, I got the 3L swap with Quaife, Clutch and flywheel done. Total net HP on that was 230hp and 210tq at the wheels. Then I added a few more things, and tuned it a little and got it up to 251hp and 229tq at the wheels. I now have about $2000 more of mods and etc to put on it, and it should get me to about 280+ hp at the wheels, and put me to the same cost of the turbo kit without install!!!

Any idea what your 0-60 times are? Are you able to use a non custom exhaust...like a borla with that setup. Might be worthwhile for me a year for now. Along with a Level 10 tranny upgrade.

You can adjust the idle by turning the idle screw on the throttle body.

jjennings how is it that your car is getting such good gas milage? I get about 21 in the city and 31 on the highway.

Jimmy.....you had to expect this at some time......I couldn't find your modlist that you posted once, but I'm sure someone can. Keep up the good work.....

P.S. ~ Can't wait to meet up with ya again next year....maybe I'll have some rims by then

3.0 Duratec gets pretty good mileage... my Escape without mods can turn 25 MPG without sweat... better than my Cougar ever did (more power= less stomping on the gas to get revs=better MPG).

I'm quite sure Jimmy has Borla carbon fiber dual... although he changes his car so much it is different every time I see it... so who knows

jjennings
07-15-2002, 05:07 PM
Well, Irwin your right. I do change it a lot. I don't have the Borla anymore.

Yes, any exhaust will work on it, so will any of the currently available headers and Y-Pipe.

How hard is it to install Duratec 3.0 in cougar? My sis has 98 taurus SE with 3.0 duratec in it. I don't think she would ever notice if I swap her 3.0 with my 2.5.......
and her car only have like 9000 miles in it

what you guys think????

jjennings
07-19-2002, 03:41 PM
It's actually not very hard to swap her 3L in your car, but I don't know if your 2.5 can go back into her car, I don't think the crank will reach??
