View Full Version : Sounds of the new exhaust!

A while ago, I was complaining about how ricey the Borla sounded with headers and no cat. Well, the Borla single is out and has been replaced with a YoDude stainless. Since I really need extra muffling and extra flow, I went with a custom muffler - a Dynomax Ultra Flo 17289, which has a 20-inch long case (compared to the standard 14-inch).

Josh sent me a kit with no muffler at a substantial discount. It had a length of straight pipe where the muffler would normally go, so I could install the exhaust first, then drive to the muffler shop to have the Ultra Flo put on.

This is what it sounded like with no muffler at all, no main cat, and MSDS headers (You have no idea how loud this was in person.... I was recording it from a block away to keep the mic from distorting, even though it still did a little):

MSDS headers, no main cat, no muffler, YoDude exhaust (http://odin.prohosting.com/~cougrrr/str8_pipe.wav)

With the muffler in place, it got much, much quieter. I honestly was not expecting this muffler to do that much, but from now on, I will always buy the largest muffler I can possibly fit. In this case, I had to remove one of the hangers to make room for the muffler, but it was worth it.

MSDS headers, no main cat, Ultra Flo 17289 muffler, YoDude exhaust (http://odin.prohosting.com/~cougrrr/ultra_flo2.wav)

MSDS headers, no main cat, Ultra Flo 17289 muffler, YoDude exhaust, 0-60 run, inside car with open windows (http://odin.prohosting.com/~cougrrr/0_60.WAV)

Dammit man, don't make me regret getting rid of the UltraFlow. :( Sounds killer, though. Very ballsy (as mine did, and I can only imagine yours with the MSDS and no cat). Just prepare for the horrid droning on the highway.

Any drone Frank?

I'm not sure I'd say it 'drones' at all. All of my previous exhaust have had a drone to them... which was a boomy bass note at around 1800-2000rpm. This exhaust really doesn't do that. It seems like almost all of the sound is coming out the tail pipes, which is still loud enough for me to hear when I accelerate but not enough for when I'm just cruising or at high speeds when wind noise more or less drowns it out. I think the reason for there being very little drone is having no main cat and a huge center muffler... that was the plan afterall ;)

Since you were just under there how many inches you think there is in the center section before the y-split? I have 22" magnaflow in there but she's only 4"D and I'm wondering if I can take both my ultraflows and line them up back to back that would be about 33", probably too long uh? Otherwise this week I'm leaving the magna and I got some bullets to put on the rear, the ultraflows back there are too gaudy looking and the car is too quiet.

Well, the problem is that the exhaust makes a few bends before it goes to the y-split. Right now, the muffler is as close to the first bend as it can be, and it's about 4-5 inches from the cat flange. I'd say that largest muffler you could fit would be one with a 24-inch case.

Yeah now that I think if it, my 22" magna is just like that but about 2-3" from the cat flange. I'll leave it and run the 12" bullets in the rear, that should give me the increase in sound I want with hopefully no drone. That means I'll have 2 new SS ultraflows for sale soon! Dammit this exhaust guessing game is a losing propostion! This is the 4th and final re-do and if it sucks, I'm going to a high flow single!

Have you tried it with no rear mufflers are all? I had the Yo dude before and that's when this thing started after adding the MSDS, it had too much drone. I haven't seen how this magnaflow will do with out rear muffs, but I'm not goin gto try I'll just put thte little 12"L 4"D dynomax bullets back there and see what I end up with. Hoping for little drone a that mustang growl at idle.

Sounds Good,

I just added a straight through resonator to my custom dual mini-turbo muffler set up.

I realized it sounded to ricey. The straight through resonator isn't as restrictive as the factory unit and now my car has a nice mellow "more mature" sporty nature to it.

I am 34 years old in a few days, and the type of woman I am looking forward doesn't appreciate that loud buzzy sound. (Actually, neither do I. I just didn't realize how annoying my car sounded until my buddy pointed it out to me.)

I am a lot happier with th sound of my car now.

When I first made the mod ( I also re-installed the throttle hang mod) my car wasn't getting very good gas mileage, and it didn't feel as aggressive as before.

I disconnected the battery and let the car's computer reset. Now it is doing a lot better. Gas mileage is up, and it feels and sounds great.

Happy Cougaring!
