View Full Version : 100mph in a squad

I had an interesting road tales today. I was recently hired at a police department and while I was at work today there was a group traveling down to Springfield to pick-up some new squad cars. One of the people failed to show-up, so I was asked to fill her spot. I eagerly accepted ($10+/hr to drive a car? Hell yeah!). We were all joking about seeing how fast the new cars could go, but little did I know we would get pretty close. Driving back with the cars, I was trailing up the rear and realized that we were really hauling a$$. Drove by a state trooper at about 85 as he gave us a friendly wave. Almost the whole way back we cruised at 85-95mph, and the top speed reached by me was about 103. Needless to say, what a fun ride that was, and I was paid for it! God I love my new job!

LoL. That's awesome dude. That is really slow for squad cars I think, I thought they did in excess of 130?

The 100mph wasn't the car's top speed, but just my top speed for today. Even though I didn't get to top it out, it still was a fun ride!

Dude that's cool... what do you do there? It didn't sound like your an officer, or else you may not be so excited about driving a squad car.

It's nice to see that you and the other cops are setting a good example for everyone else. It really pisses me off that you guys were all doing that, but if you were to see someone else do it, you'd have their license in a heartbeat. And then the state trooper that didn't do a damn thing to stop you when he saw you all flying by? What the hell? This is the exact reason why I'm losing (and have lost) so much respect for police officers. They'll have your ass if you screw up, but it's fine for them to fly down the highway at 100 mph, or turn on their lights so they can get through a stoplight. Why is it okay for all of you to do that kind of crap, but if you were to see me you'd pull me right on over? God, I f#cking hate hypocrites.

I'm a dispatcher. Yeah, first time driving a squad. It was cool, brand new (4miles on odometer), no plates, no lights either (although not a prob, everyone got out of our way). Getting the wave and nod from the state trooper was funny, especially considering how fast we were going.

As for the issue that you have against cops catman, remember they're not all bad. Even though I was flying in the squad, in my car when I drive, I am pretty conservative (usually no more than 10 over). If you have lost respect for cops, that's fine it's your opinion and I can't change that for you, and neither am I going to try. We all can be hypocrites sometimes, but about the lights through the stoplights, sometimes it is necessary for an officer to do that while going to a call. Some calls specifically warrant for the officer to not use his lights and siren, for it might warn the offenders of their upcoming presence. Now I'm not saying some guys don't do it because they're to impatient to wait for the light on the way to lunch, but just realize the majority of guys don't abuse their privileges as much as thought. Me personally when I am a sworn officer, will keep my speed reasonable most of the time. Will I speed every now and then, sure, but I would expect to be pulled for it. Am I a hypocrite, yeah maybe, but I can admit it at least.

I respect that Croc! I usually have encounterments with the less lenient officers. But as for what catman said, if he were a cop I bet he could try to get away with some fun also. I have raced a few Mo State Highway patrol once or twice of a start line or so but never 10 over posted.. I wish one day I could venture into the road area with you and maybe you could try that squad car on for size.. Those who have never been hypocritical that means they either don't do anything, or that they are very moral and truthful.

My point wasn't that all cops are bad or that they're all crooked or anything like that. I know there are a lot of very good cops out there that do their absolute best to keep me and the people I know safer. The point I was trying to make is that how can you or the people you were with as police officers pull someone over for rolling a stop sign or going 10 mph over the limit when you were flying down the road at over 100 mph? Granted, you probably didn't do that for very long, but even the 85-95 you said you were going for most of the trip is going pretty fast. And like I said, if you were sitting on the side of the road in your squad car and saw me fly by you at 95 mph, you'd pull my ass right over. Now I'm not going to say that I never speed, race, or anything else against the law. Hell, I do something like that almost on a daily basis. But I'm also not telling other people not to do it, and I'm certainly not punishing them for it.

Omaedon, no I wouldn't abuse my power as a police officer just to have a little fun. If I were a cop, I'd take my job very seriously and wouldn't do anything in that squad car that I would normally pull someone else over for right away. Like I said before, I hate hypocrites. I wouldn't sit there and punish someone for something and then turn around and do the same exact thing that they just did. That's why I couldn't ever be a cop.

You guys ever see that video of the police cruisers chasing and keeping up with a Corvette at 150mph? The Vette crashed while passing some 18 wheelers. The guy LIVED custom_images/emoticons/shocked.gif...then he was arrested

What cars were they.....crown victoria's????

Yup. Don't get me wrong. The Vette was blowing them away in acceleration, but the Crown Vic's kept right up as far as top speed goes. Video was off a helicopter.

That the one where he tried to change lanes and hit the back of the 18 wheeler in the back of his car and his car looked like it exploded. He wasn't wearing a seat belt so he flew out with minor injuries. If he had his seat belt he probably would have died.

YES!!! Unbelievable huh? Funny how he was just sitting up on the side of the road after being ejected out via the IIRC sunroof

I think it was a convertible, but not sure. Yeah he was just sitting there probably dazed out of his mind.

Catman, your right in the fact that it was hypocritical for us to be going that fast and then at a later time busting someone for it, but what, we're not allowed to have fun sometimes too? I can understand the anger some people (such as you) can have for a situation like that, but so many people race at higher speeds, in more dangerous situations (crowded roads, pedestrians walking by) and don't think of others. We were on a fairly open highway trucking along, not to say that it was right, but we were just having a good time. But like I said before, normally I'm pretty conservative with my driving, I just had to let loose along with the others.

If there are Ford Crown Vic's some of those are "Police Intercepters", we have them in Florida, and if you see one just pull over, theres no hope.

The police interceptors are damn fast. They have ALL special parts, I don't think anything in them is stock except the fluid reservoirs.

As for speeding on the highway, I have been pulled over twice on the highway, and 3 times (not on the highway not going much over 50 at 1, or 2 in the morning when no one else was on the road. So, I have much of the same feeling as Catman. It's very hypocritical.

Uh, they're not THAT fast. Specs. (http://www.fleet.ford.com/products/specialty_vehicles/2002_Police_Interceptor.asp) Ford's goal when designing them was 0-60 in 8 seconds and a top speed of 130MPH. They only have 235HP and they're weighed down with a lot of equipment. However, I've heard rumors that they're going to start putting the 4.6L DOHC V-8 from the Marauder in cop cars. The cop car you should really look out for is the Chevrolet Caprice LT-1 ;)

My patrol car is a police interceptor and for the most part the extent of the modifications is similar to what they call a *taxi-cab* package. Heavier shocks, alternator blah blah

I can tell you for a fact 2001 Ford Crown Victoria police interceptor light bar and equipment will run every bit of 125 and not very much more. Keep in mind the giant light bar on top is not designed for aerodynamics.

I won't bother to argue the point several have expressed anger over the age old *Do as I say not as I do*

Two reasons the average person isn't in a law enforcement profession
A. Money
B. commitment
