View Full Version : caution to all ram air kit users
be careful of puttin a ram air kit on all filters other than the weapon R. my car acted very strange, it stuttered halfway thorugh third gear, i thought it might be the fuel pump... turns out my ram air works so darn good that it was shoving dirt particles through my filter and they were screwin with my MAF. they said it wasn't enough to hurt anything (the dealer checked it out) but my stepdad told me i better point the hose so that it doesnt' shove air at 100 mph into my filter. after talking with the weapon R guy he informed me that the complete kit that they sell does not point directly at the filter and it could be that their filter is stronger, but he hasn't had probs in 3 years w/his kit.
think about it.. the faster you go the faster air travels into the tube.. the air wasn't moving really until you and yoru ram air kit came along, so it gets shoved into your intake goin 70-130 mph (depending how insane you are at the moment) i know it seems trivial but dirt particles are just tiny tiny sharp rocks and they will be shoved into the filter at whatever speed you are going. so i pointed the tube at the strut tower to allow cold air to circulate into the bay.
so does that make sense?

Where did you run the kit too? And i am having a hard time getting everything to fit in my little engine compartment

kinda unrelated, but would putting the scoop by the air dam be bad? It seems the most logical, but then again a lot of water could get in that.

If you're going to use the 'ram air' kit, you're best off putting some kind of fine mesh over the 'scoop', to prevent larger dirt and rock particles from getting scooped in. It will restrict some of the airflow, but that won't really matter too much since you're probably providing more air than the engine wants to/can suck in anyway. :)
i built my kit, and i have had it for like 10 months now, i ran it trough the stock air drawtube hole, wound it through the fender and bumper to the lower grill beside the drivers side fog light, the sucker works too good.
p.s. as long as yiou have a 3" or larger hose you will not have any restriction if you are afraid of it.. you can only take in as much air as your TB and MAF allow.. think about it

The problem is probably turbulence in the MAF, not dust. It might help somewhat if you had an air diffuser screen from a Contour SVT...
i've had my design for liek 10 months and it jsut now gets too much turbulence? nah man, the ford techs checked it out... its dust

OK, I understand now. When I had a quasi ram-air setup, it left a big dark spot on my air filter. So a lot of dirt was caught by the filter, but there was so much that some probably wasn't. As for the Weapon-R, I would NOT trust a foam filter to handle that much dirt. They are not that durable and already need very frequent cleaning. I would recommend using a paper filter with an SVT airbox for a sealed 'ram-air' setup.

sooooooo... what filter did you run?

A KKM (S&B) filter...

Zero, did your homemade ram air kit produce a more noticeable growl?

Ram air + MAF = engine running like crap.
Now, if you have a MAP vehicle, that's different.
my ram air thing is the exact same design as the weapon R design.
chris - my engine runs darn consistent since i did the ram air thing, i think the lack of consistency in the cougar's performance that everyone whines about is generally cause by the lack of good air. JMO though

What do you guys use to get the air into the engine compartment? Dryer hose? I don't really want ram air, I just want the intake to have a fresh supply of cool air.
so if i get the weapon r intake and ram air and cold air box, you all think its a bad idea or the best

I've seen it where just the flow after the filter causes problems with the MAF (not all the air flowing through the sampling tube, due to turbulance)... You found rocks and debris INSIDE the intake after the filter?! Sounds like the filter isn't doing it's job (or that you need some sort of better mesh screening in front?)...
Do you have pictures of your setup?

I'd like to see some pics too. I want to know how you got the hose to fit inside the fender well. There is a spot where the opening closes to about an inch and a half. How did you get past that? I tried today, and couldn't do it without crushing the hose to the point that it was useless.

guess that just says the airflow of the weapon R filters suck,,,imo
