It is my girlfriends car, it is a brand new 2001 V6 ATX no mods at all..

with a half a tank of gas.
first run 16.74 shifting gears my self.

2nd run 16.67 not shifting
3rd run 16.66 not shifting

4th run 16.64 not shifting, pulled out air filter, and pulled out
spare tire.

Launched the car doing a break stand (Gas pedal floored, brakes slammed)
half a tank of gas (89 octane, midgrade)
Raceway Park Englishtown NJ

Trying to find out what others have ran. I have seen some pretty bad 17 sec times, I am not sure why. Dont know if we got lucky. I also plan on figuring some cheap easy mods that will bring it into the low 16 hopefully 15 sec bracket. Dont know if this is possible but I will find out next year.

Also wouldn't recommend removing air filter either.

I dont know how to move this to the drag racing forum. If someone else can do it then go for it.
I really want people to respond with times, not with statements.
Johnnycat, I have been going to the track now for 10+ years and have raced much faster cars and have raced in all different time brackets. I am not looking for your opinion. Thanks anyway.

People please answer questions or reply to the specific topic. If you have opinions and nothing to contribute to this post please start a new post.\

Thanks

kmmon1 can u scan your timeslips. cuz are ATX are very unlikely to get in the 16's stock. What is the elevation at the track? how were track conditions? did u have a 40 mph wind w/ you? my best stock was 17.3 and I couldn't better that, for over a year. Now i'm in the mid-low 15's, but the car is gonna be gone soon!

That drag strip is as close to sea level as possible...it's located in Central NJ...I live about 5 min from it. Kmmon1...who are you?? And where do you live? I live right near the track, and have gone a few times this year and never see cougars there.

well...either way...good runs. When were they made??

pgtatx,

I live in Norther NJ up by Paramus. I was there only once this year. It is my girfriends car and thought she would have a good time, there. She actually ran the last three races I only ran the first, I think I slowed it down by shifting myself. It was the last weekend of the season, it was saturday a few weeks ago. I forget what date, it was the day of the corvette shootout. I did not realize till I checked on here that her times were pretty good for a stock cougar, about the fastes I have seen for an automatic. IT would be a great bracket racer because the times were so consistent. The car is brand new so I am not doing to much work to it and it has a warranty. Iam going to try some cheap easy mods, and adjustments and hopefully get a little more out of it. I typically race my mustang down there, I have Laroccas performance tune my mustang, they are right by the track. It will be back down to the soon to be tuned and dyno'd once my blower is back on the car. I know with the mustang there were some easy tricks when it was stock to get some speed, Fuel pump and pressure, airbox mod, timing and tons of other stuff. I am hoping to find a few easy things like that to get the car a little faster.

Then tell me what would happen if something went up into the UIM and make its way down? Not the best idea on a stock car :)

ZNcoug,
something going into the upper intake, is not a good idea on any car, stock or modified. But I assume you have seen the air intake set up on these cougars. The mouth of the tube is in the fender, where nothing can really fly up there, then there is a bend and a bottle neck where it makes it even harder for something to pass through. I would never do this on the street, I am not stupid, but the track is for the most part clean, dry and free from any debris, so the odds of something making into the intake is low, very low. I know what you guys are saying, but I really was not worried. If I had a ram air scoop, i would not do this, cause that thing is like a vacuum cleaner for the ground. or at least the low mounted ones.

This post was not here to start arguments or anything like this, I wanted to know where I was at with my times. Please people reply to the posts I hate when someones post gets cluttered with all answers and things they were not looking for. Just thought this would be a good post for poeple to compare there times too others, Or other equivalent cars.

Those are good times for a stock ATX, kmmon1. I would like to give you some times, but my car hasn't been to the track, and I don't even have a g-tech, so I can only gauge my performance by the most ghetto of methods... By racing cars that I already know the performance of and using a stop watch and accelerating from 0 to 60 on a desserted road late at night.

When my car was stock, I believe it was a mid/high 16-second car. The closest race I had back then was against a Dodge Intrepid ES (auto). It was neck-and-next all the way to 100mph, and those cars run 16.6-16.8, so that's pretty much the same as the results you got. I haven't spent *that* much on my car, but I think it's capable of around 15.5 now. The closest race I've had in recent memory was against BMW 328 with an average driver. Those cars run about 15.0, maybe add 0.5 seconds for the guy's granny-shifting (we were even, but I felt like he was pulling on me slightly in every gear, then losing a little on the shifts). The last time I used the stopwatch, I had 0-60 runs of anywhere from 6.23 to 6.68 on a cool night, but we know how unreliable that is... I doubt it's quite that fast, but it hasn't let me down in a long time, either. Just don't let anyone tell you that there's no hope for a V6 ATX. It's better to start with a manual, but you've gotta go with what you've got.

I turned in a 17.4 with my 2001 V6 ATX last summer at Norwalk, Ohio. However, that included my inaugural trip down the 1/4-mile strip (can you say "rookie"?)

I about cried, since there were a couple Si's running in mid/upper 15's.

Ill be racing saturday. All I have done is removed the airbox restrictor thing and I am getting my oil changed tomorrow and i'll prolly go with around a 1/4 tank. I might take out the spare and jack. I'll let you guys know.

my best and first run was: 16.847@83mph

stock weight because of the added suspension compnents and the lack of spare tire, i did need allot of air in my front right tire and that was with half a tank of gas, after that i ran consistent 16.95.... i was kinda bummed but oh well :)
i pretty much just have intake and exhaust (SVT upper but no TB so its jsut liek a smoothe stock on :( ) and i shifted myself because the computer shifts too low. next time i go i'll let the comp do it on one run so i can see how awful it is... and if its faster i'll never shift manually again.

Well I just got back from the track here are my times..

1st run: 17.349 @ 80.12MPH w/ .762 Reaction Time

2nd run: 17.004 @ 81.98MPH w/ .964 Reaction Time

3rd run: 16.791 @ 82.45MPH w/ .777 Reaction Time

Here are the specs on my car: 2000 V6 ATX w/ 16,000 miles, Oil was changed 4 days ago, 1/4 tank of fuel (87 octane), Removed air filter. I also launched by holding the brake and pressing the gas.

The Gainesville Raceway is about 50 feet above sea level, if that.. and it was 73 degrees out.

I was so happy on my last run.. :)

Good job... Seems like a stock ATX has no trouble running high 16s as long as you launch it properly.

NEWBIE HERE!!

so wut basically did was, take out the air filter, gas and break at starting, and shifted urself from 1-2-D...(if u did shift ur self, at wut RPMs did u shift at?)..

....i just got smoked by my friends Z24 today....i think i could have beaten him, but wuz afraid to push the car, and i didnt have a good techinique( just pushed gas and thats it)... o well, just got my licence 2 months ago, so i'll take it slow at first..but i need to win!!

Yeah here are pretty much the conditions for my last run...

I had the A/C off, radio off, windows rolled up, o/d off, air filter out, engine was warm, 1/4 tank of gas - 89 octane.

I went around the water cuz i would embarass myself doing a 3 spin "burn-out". Then I put my left foot on the brake and pulled up to the line and when the 2nd light started to shine i pressed the gas a little and as soon as it hit the last yellow i let off and floored the *****, right exactly as the tach got to 6k i shifted into 2nd, keeping my foot on the gas the entire time, it amazingly went all the way to about 6800 before it shifted, then the 2 to 3 shift is a little easier since it goes up so slow and I shifted right around 6400 and then it eventually got there around 6600, then just floored it the rest of the way. I just hope to be into the 15's N/A when I get all the stuff ready for the turbo to go on.

Good Luck!

UPDATE:

i can run 16.5@84.5mph all day long now

powerbraking and the SVT TB took 3 tenths off!!! next time i'm gonna do a nice burnout then go to so maybe i can not spin my tires on launch, but i doubt it would help

mods: intake, SVT TB, SVT upper, yodude exhaust
