My two friends and I were coming home to my house after a party saturday morning. I'm driving an ATX 99 Cougar, no mods (no money : ( ), one of my friends is in a brand new Mitsubishi Lancer (pretty nice car), and my other friend is in a brand new Ford Ranger Edge. Both of their cars are 5spd MTX's. So, first my friend in the Lancer wants to race. It's on.
At this point I didn't want hold the brake and rev, so I just dropped it into first and started that way. The Lancer revs high, around 5 RPM and drops clutch. He pulls ahead fast in the beginning, about half a car length. He shifts into second, and he drops his lead a little. I redline at about 6.2, and put it into second. I feel my car lurch ahead, and we're neck and neck. He shifts to third, and I pull ahead slightly. Finally, I shift into drive and my V6 just dominates his 4 banger. It was too close to start with, but I won without a problem.
Next we have the 01 Ranger Edge. Its a MTX, V6 3.0L, nothing to laugh at. I've learned not to underestimate trucks, they can surprise you easily. Anyway, race starts off same as the Lancer - Me in 1st, him in neutral revving to around 5, maybe more. He burns rubber for a good 20 ft to start with, and is a good car length in front of me as he shifts into second. I got one of those random bad starts, maybe someone else who drives an ATX knows what I'm talking about - sometimes you can feel the cougar lurch and feel the V6 at work, and sometimes it feels like your hardly flooring it at all, and it takes off in a nice, easy pace, hardly suitable for racing. Anyway, he shifts to second, and loses a good amount of ground because he is much less experienced in driving manual. After I put the cat into second, she picks up a bit and I can finally feel the wheels start moving. When he shifts into third I pull ahead, and once again I put her into drive and take off.
Two fun races with two good friends, and two good victories for the cat :)

Nice kills! You might not want to put your car in first and manually change it to second and then drive though. I don't think it's that good for the transmission and you really don't get that much of an advantage (if any) over just leaving it in drive. If you want to get the most out of your ATX, turn of the AC, radio, and overdrive. Then you can hold the brake and rev it a little if you want (doesn't seem to me like that's really good for the car either), or as soon as the light turns green, push the gas in about 3/4 of the way till you get to about 2-2.5k rpms, then floor it. When you floor the ATX right away, that's when you tend to get that sluggish start you described. For more info, I think there's a pretty good How-To on launching an ATX in the How-To section of the board.
