It depends on how deep the scratch is, if you can see white or gray, then you went through your clearcoat and paint. There aren't really any effective miracle products that can make scratches disappear, the most you can do is conceal it, unless you can afford to have the entire hood repainted. Depending on how deep it is and where it is at, you could try some touch up paint applied carefully with a toothpick or some other fine tipped object. But if it isn't that deep, I have heard really good things about a new product Meguiars has out called Scratch-X which will help to conceal the scratch. It will also do a great job on swirl marks. Make sure to wax the area around the scratch afterwards to protect it from rust if necessary (might as well wax the whole car at this point). If you have prevalent swirl marks, you might also want to avoid automated car washes and wax more often with a good wax and soft cotton terry cloth.

Ditto on the Scratch-X, my dog jumped on the hood of my car, scratched the SH*T out of it. I thought I was going to have to have the thing wet sanded and buffed. I tried some Scratch X and 95% of them are either gone, or so faint they aren't even noticable to anyone but my anal retentive ass.
