Well, my car's been in the shop for 3 days for a "rattling" noise I heard on the weekend. According to the service manager, the noise is coming from the "rear head/timing chain area". When I called for an update today, he was on the phone with the big boys at Ford because he said "we've never seen anything like this happen with one of these engines before". He's going to try and find out if anyone else has reported this type of thing before and what could be the possible problem/solution. They're going to be opening it up tomorrow to check it out. Listen to this though............this happened with <100 km left on my factory warranty!!! Thank God for that at least!!
Needless to say, I'm not a very happy camper at all.......actually, I'm pretty depressed about the whole thing. I mean I've done so much with this car and I just got it to where I wanted it in terms of looks and power and then this. Just seems that all the heart and soul I put into it is now wasted. I love my car and take care of it better than I do myself sometimes but if it's something where a major rebuild may have to be done, I don't know if I want to keep it only to have a worse problem arise in the future. I'm so f**king confused about this whole f**king thing! (Pathetic as that may sound).
Anyway, I thought I'd give you guys the 411. I'll keep you posted with what happens as I find out more.

Wow... lucky on the warranty thing...
I feel/felt kinda the same way when I saw my GFX paint cracking. Rather than spending the money on something new and cool for the car, I've got spend it on fixing something less than a year old. And then it's like "well, why even bother? Why not just sell it and get something I won't have the urge to mod, like a Focus"

Dom, I know exactly what the feeling is like as you already know that I went through it. You know, if you luck out and they give you a crate motor, you won't feel so down. I mean, I thought it sucked the big one, when I found out the motor had to be pulled, but look what motor I ended up with. I lucked out there, but look at the bright side, if the heart gets a replacement, any thing that go wrong will be minor in comparison. You have a really nice car and I'd hate to see you give it up.
Just some thoughts.

shoot man, when you told me you were taking your car into the shop, i had no idea it was this serious...but don't give up hope though, i'm sure everything will be fine...our cars are made of pretty stern stuff, it'll pull through. I know how depressing it can be though, you should have seen me the first time somebody hit my car. It was parked at a friends house, and his uncle just ploughed into it...i was LIVID...and after i calmed down, i called my parents, told them i wouldn't be coming home that night, and my friend poured me three stiff glasses of whisky, and i crashed at his place ;)
Damn man! That really sucks! I don't know if its worse than what happened to me, but it is pretty bad! ;) Thank God you still had some warranty left! I hope it all works out for you, it would be a shame to lose a fellow Cougar owner! I hope you think it over before you make your final decision!

Hey Dom, Really sorry to hear about your bad luck dude!! man, i know what you mean, a car to some people is just a means of transportation. However, to a few of us, its more like another piece of ourselves. My girlfriend and a lot of my friends think im pathetic b/c of the way i baby my car, but to me its my little piece of heaven on earth. I respect the way your feeling right now dude, and its really ****ty. I hope all works out, and so long as you have warantee i wouldn't sweat it too much. Anyways, take care brother and don't worry things will work out. Later Goose.

Very well put! This is MUCH more than JUST a car, it's part of you! My Cougar is the only thing in this world that I can call my own! I pay for it, I take care of it, I do everything for it! I know, MOST people see their car as just a car, but not us, and thats why we've all come together! I really hope everything works out for you man, if anyone can relate to what you're going through, its definitely me! :)
Best of luck man!

Dude! That sounds serious. I hope everything works out for you. Glad to hear that you still had warranty on it. Have you considered an extended service plan for the Powertrain?
I know how much you've put into this car, and I'd feel the same way too if that happened to me. I think of my car as an extension of myself, and a way to express who I am. If it were to break down, so would I. I feel for you Dom. Just don't get rid of that car though, it's a gorgeous ride.
Take Care.

WOW!! Thanks for all the support and understanding guys! You don't realize how much it means to me.......really. You guys are great!! Anyhow........
***UPDATE***
Timing chain tensioner needs to be replaced. Ford said other such problems have been reported. Caused by.....DOH!......can't remember what he said........something about heat and wear (his phone was really crappy). May be finished by 5pm tonight. Otherwise, tomorrow for sure because there's a lot of work involved to get to it.
Thank God! I'm so releaved it wasn't anything extremely serious and that it's covered under warranty. I'm going to go by Dixie Ford tonight to check on it and buy the extended warranty on the spot. After this, I'd rather be safe than sorry. Wonder if this was a long standing problem that just surfaced now? Think it would've been impacting performance (ie. making me lose power)?
All in all, I believe it's good news. 9 LIVEZ will be road worthy again!! Guess my plate really does mean something after all!!
Any opinions on this would be most welcome! Thanks again everyone for your encouragement and compassion!!
See you all on Sunday!! Really can't wait now!!
Dom
Glad to hear everything worked out! I'm gonna try << fingers crossed>> to make it to the meet this sunday, if someone can give me a ride! Anyways, I hope to see you all there!

the only opinion i can give you is that i think going with the extended warranty is damn good idea. just make sure you find out EXACTLY what it covers (cuz it's not bumper-to-bumper)...like in case this problem reoccurs...my dealership has a way of fixing things just enough so they break again in a few months...hopefully they have good people working on it, and it will never surface again.

Hey, you now have 8 more to go. Glad to hear everything is okay. Dixie couldn't fix my squeak. But at least mine was only a squeak. I think we are all glad that everyone here feels the same way about their cars otherwise I think we would all be seeing a shrink since most people I know think I'm a little nuts and roll their eyes every time I talk about my car which usually comes up in most of my conversations. See you on Sunday. :)
