Hello,

I recently purchased a 99 cougar sport, 2.5L ATX. The car is from Florida, in great shape and only has 68,000. I paid $2500 for it. I was underneath the car and noticed a rubber piece hanging down from what looks to be a recessed opening with a gear??? in it. This rubber piece is damaged and will not fit in the opening anymore? What is this and should it be replaced?

Also, I have some issues with shifting, exaples are judder, light bucking, and quick shifts (2 between 35-40mph). Any ideas.

Lastly, the fog lamps do not work. The bulbs are good but when you pull out the switch nothing happens. I didn't see any fuses blown, but I only looked for a minute.

Thanks for any help you may have. Excellent site.

That is the dust cover on the flexplate. It probably SHOULD be replaced, although unless you're fording any streams or driving in heavy rain, you could get by safely for the time being. If too much water gets in there, it will make its way up to your starter, which won't be good.

Take a CLOSE look at your fluid level, and the color and smell of your transmission fluid. Top it off if it's low, and flush it if it's brown or smells burnt.

Welcome aboard. We'll get you straightened out yet...

You're probably going to have to trace the wires for the fog lights too see if there are any disconnects. Also make sure the plugs are seated properly on the fog lights.

Thanks for some timps to get started. Replacing brakes/rotors this weekend. Will check out the tranny fluid, possibly have it flushed.
