So I'd like get an idea if holding CougarFest in Canada is in the realm of possibility. I don't want to do all the leg work if nobody would even consider going. The Canadians have been crossing the boarder for years with out any problems so i don't see any problems going the other way.
There are a lot of good reasons why to have it up here but here are just a few.
1. Drinking age is 19 (Notice I put that as the number 1 reason ;) )
2. I know of at least 3 drag strips and 4 road tracks with in a couple hours of each other in Southern Ontario.
3. Lots of Small towns with cheap hotels that will be close to Tracks but not to far from major cities.
4. Lots to see and do with in driving distances
5. Duty Free
6. Close to U.S. borders
7. Major Airports are close by
8. The Beer Tastes way better up here
9. Something different to see
10. Canadians are just so nice
But will you Americans come???
To Cross the boarder in 2009 you will only need a driver license and birth certificate if you drive. If you fly you need a passport.
If you are under 18, you just need a letter with your parents consent to cross the border.
Here are a couple sites with info on crossing the border.
Canada (http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1082.html)
Information for crossing the border (http://www.campsronoda.com/Information%20about%20crossing%20the%20border.htm)
So Vote if you would come or not based on it being in Canada and post your reason. Basically if it was the very best proposal and no other options were available would you or would you not go based solely on the fact it's in Canada?

I don't know Mav. I'm going to try to go for hamilfest. But probably not for cougarfest. The gas is way more expensive there. Brett is apparently a terrorist and gets both of us searched. I can't say I've liked any food there except what was cooked by Ron, Jenny and Dan. :( But I <3 Canadians! Oh and my dollar isn't worth anything anymore

I would consider it.....depends on how many long trips I have planned for next year and what my new job will allow. If I went at all, it would be on a plane, not driving.
There is certainly a big Cougar crowd in Canadia.

Yes there is, and even more that don't make the trip down to Cougarfest each year.
I think it would be something New, Something different, something exciting. I'm sure all my fellow Canadians would be more than happy to make sure it was a memorable event for everyone. ;)

It's at Par right now and i don't think it's going to drop any more. Once you guys get a new President it will probablly spike back up. ;)
Windsor is actually further than most places in Ontario from Ohio. You can cross at Niagara Falls/ Buffalo. Once you're across the boarder you can go anywhere.

I've never complained about the driving time. That's not my motivation for having it up here. Just want to change things up a bit and make it more interesting. ;)

I think one of 2 ideas would be great since it's getting to be a smaller and smaller crew each year of core Cougar folks.
1) Hamillfest is growing exponentially and it's about 2 hours into Canada and we're getting almost more Americans each year than CAnadians! It's quite popular, so perhaps a CF / Hamillfest merger in like August would rock.
2) CF coming back to the home of the Cougar in Michigan would be fun too.. I figure within a couple more years, it'll just end up in Brad's back yard anyways.
I do like Mark's idea... it's been mentioned a few times and seems welcomed by more people than I expected in verbal chats.

George - as I was saying at Fest... going to the south in the middle of July is basically suicide
Just thinking back - even with ALL the problems in V.Beach 2003, the thing I remember most is the unbearable heat. Even this past Saturday in Indy with the group photo.. it was nasty!
Now, have a Cougarbash in say, the middle of March, and I'm all for flying down early!
As for Canada - Jenny was saying Windsor would be excellent... and I would happen to agree. The nicest thing is that its RIGHT across the boarder from Detroit, so no one would have to really drive 'into' Canada. It would be fun, but i'm also anxious to hear what Lisa and friends come up with for Ohio...

The location of fest has never (and should never) be about giving a certain group of people a "break" from the driving...it should be about a car friendly city and hotel with a lot of attractions for everyone. Having it in located in the geographic middle of the majority of the members that come to fest just makes sense, but it shouldn't be written in stone.
Back on topic, I'd consider Canada...I thought we had to have a passport though to drive across the border  If not...awesome. 100 bucks less I'd have to spend on it.
Keep in mind though, some people may not make it across the border. I have a couple friends that have tried only to find out that because of a DUI conviction less than 7 years ago, they weren't allowed to cross. Not sure if that is an actual law, or they just caught customs on a bad day. Not trying to scare anyone away, but just something to think about.

I totally agree, it's not about making it a shorter or longer drive for anyone. I know Southern Ontario has a huge Car enthusiasts following, lots of race tracks, lots of hotels close to everything. Plus it's something completely different than the last ten years. Just think of the T-Shirt possibilities!

Indi had a decent hotel two years ago, but judging this year its gotten worse. And honestly half the people that go to Fest never compete in ANY form of motorsports.
Fest 05 had the Track because of the raffles that were pushed, however this year none of them were pushed and nobody was wanting to go on a cruise either when the time came.

The hotel did seem a bit worse, but they put up with us a lot better than Boardman did in 07...I should have said car and car-owner friendly.
I'd love to see people be interested in the motorsport aspect of it, but keep in mind a lot of us are driving a long distance in a 9 year old car. I would hate to be 600 miles away from home and break something.

I believe by next year you may be required to have a passport to cross. However, a passport lasts for 5 years? So most likely, those who enjoy to travel will already have one, or at least will need one in the next 5 years.
As far as not being able to cross, I don't think it's an issue. I found the canadian border pretty easy. Coming into the states is more of a hassle than coming into canada. If you are worried, driving in a caravan of cougars is a good ticket in, if they let 5 cougars in for the same event, why not 6?

the issue when crossing is when you have drug or abuse charges on your record. DUI's are under the same idea, so if you have possession, DUI, trafficking or a malicious charge on your record there are typically forms you can have filled out that will allow you to cross the boarder.
for us to cross it is on our record for life until we have it challenged and taken care of.

You won't need a passport to drive into Canada next year. Just a Drivers license and proof of citizenship ie: birth certificate. All the more reason to do it here sooner than later.
I took this right from the web page I posted in my first post.
ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: All Americans traveling by air outside the United States are required to present a passport or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States . This requirement will be extended to sea travel (except closed loop cruises), including ferry service, by the summer of 2009. Until then, U.S. citizens traveling by sea must have government-issued photo identification and a document showing their U.S. citizenship (for example, a birth certificate or certificate of nationalization), or other WHTI compliant document such as a passport card for entry or re-entry to the U.S. Sea travelers should also check with their cruise line and countries of destination for any foreign entry requirements.
Applications for the new U.S. Passport Card are now being accepted. Based on current projections, we expect the passport card to be in full production beginning in July 2008. The card may not be used to travel by air and is available only to U.S. citizens. Further information on the U.S. Passport Card is available at U.S. Passport Card (http://travel.state.gov/passport/ppt_card/ppt_card_3926.html) and upcoming changes to U.S. passport policy can be found on the Bureau of Consular Affairs web site at Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html). We strongly encourage all American citizen travelers to apply for a U.S. passport well in advance of anticipated travel. American citizens can visit travel.state.gov or call 1-877-4USA-PPT (1-877-487-2778) for information on how to apply for their passports.
Both the U.S. and Canadian governments urge frequent travelers to join the NEXUS trusted traveler program. NEXUS members receive a special travel card that allows expedited border crossings for both private and commercial travelers through both U.S. and Canadian border controls very quickly. For information about the NEXUS program see Cross often? Make it simple, use NEXUS (http://cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/prog/nexus/menu-eng.html).
Entry into Canada is solely determined by Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) officials in accordance with Canadian law, see Welcome to the Canada Border Services Agency | Bienvenue à l'Agence des services frontaliers du Canada (http://www.cbsa.gc.ca) for details. Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada must carry both proof of citizenship and identity. A valid U.S. passport or NEXUS card satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens. If U.S. citizen travelers to Canada do not have a passport or approved alternate document such as a NEXUS card, they must show a government-issued photo ID (e.g. Driver’s License) and proof of U.S. citizenship such as a U.S. birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or expired U.S. passport. Children under sixteen need only present proof of U.S. citizenship.
U.S. citizens entering Canada from a third country must have a valid U.S. passport. A visa is not required for U.S. citizens to visit Canada for up to 180 days. Anyone seeking to enter Canada for any purpose besides a visit (e.g. to work, study or immigrate) must qualify for the appropriate entry status, and should contact the Canadian Embassy or nearest consulate and see the Canadian immigration web site at Welcome to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.asp). Anyone with a criminal record (including even misdemeanors or Driving While Impaired (DWI)) charges may be barred from entering Canada and must qualify for a special waiver well in advance of any planned travel for further processing, which may take some time.
For further information on entry requirements, travelers may contact the Canadian Embassy at 501 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington DC 20001, tel. (202) 682-1740, or the Canadian consulates in Atlanta, Boston, Buffalo, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York, San Juan or Seattle. The Canadian Embassy’s web site is Embassy Washington / Ambassade du Canada à Washington (http://www.canadianembassy.org/).

Just wanted to make sure I read it correctly...
AIR TRAVEL
ALL PERSONS traveling by air outside of the United States are required to present a passport or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States.
LAND AND SEA TRAVEL
The following summarizes information available on the Department of Homeland Security’s website.
CURRENTLY:
U.S. citizens need to present either (a) a passport, passport card (scheduled to be in full production beginning in July 2008), or WHTI-compliant document; or (b) a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.
LATER:
On June 1, 2009, the U.S. government will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have a passport, passport card, or WHTI-compliant document.
Note: The passport requirement does NOT apply to U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory.
U.S. PASSPORT AND WHTI COMPLIANT DOCUMENTS:
U.S. Passport: U.S. citizens may present a valid U.S. passport when traveling via air, land or sea between the U.S. and the aforementioned Western Hemisphere countries.
The Passport Card: Passport card applications are currently being accepted in anticipation of land border travel document requirements. Based on current projections, we expect the passport card to be in full production beginning in July 2008. We will provide additional updates as available. Once in production, the passport card it will only be valid for land and sea travel between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean region, and Bermuda.
WHTI-Compliant Travel Documents for U.S. citizen travel via land or sea, as of January 31, 2008:
Trusted Traveler Cards (NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST)
State Issued Enhanced Driver’s License (when available)
Enhanced Tribal Cards (when available)
U.S. Military Identification with Military Travel Orders
U.S. Merchant Mariner Document when traveling in conjunction with official maritime business
Native American Tribal Photo Identification Card
Form I-872 American Indian Card
To me, it looks like you will need a passport for land travel effective June 2009. If that's the case, I would be a bit more hesitant for fest being in Canada. That's $100 just to cross the border. Per that same website, US passports last 10 years.

There are other countries besides Canada.
Liar! :disgust:

It's true, I've seen some of them. The people even talk funny, like in Canada, but different.

Passport requirements or not, there's no way in hell I'd go to a CF that far north. The drive to Indy alone almost put me out of commission, and having experienced a straight shot to Canada before, it is not an experience I'd like to repeat.
CF was a bit of a let-down to me this year and I'm already hesistant about going to another. Location will be the primary factor next time.

Hell Yeah I'd go to Canada! But then again, I'd go to Fest no matter where in North America it was held.

for me, i'll go anywhere. i can fly there and then rent a car. i already have my passport so thats not an issue. but, for selfish reasons, i'd like to not ahve to deal with the border if i am gonna be towing a cougar. and i'd like it to be as close as possible to me.
Indy is already too far for me, but thats just me.
but i'd like people to ask themselves what an event such as cougarfest means to them and what it should have. because for a 3 day event, its hard to please everyone. like if you want how-to's and whatnot, you have to remember that the people putting it on are volunteering time out of their "vacation" to do it. if you want an auto-involved event such as drag, etc, a lot more money is going to be needed. so you need to support any and all raffles, because i am sure no one wants to spend something like $250 on registration.
but to get back on topic, yes i'd consider canadia, home of the maple, hockey, mckenzie brothers, and home motherland of teh sonza

Why would you want milk in a bag? A jug/carton/bottle seems much more appropriate.

its concept that we have yet to grasp, i think the only benefit is the lower production, less material and easier to develop

one thing that will be a rough on some people is the hours of the LCBO or the Beer Stores, eventhough i for one would like to see a lot less drinking at fest

Most LCBOs are open until 11pm. I know it's not exactly late, but it would be late enough. You just need to be prepared. ;)

and none of the LCBO's are ghetto or let you walk in with your pants around your kness... unlike what Mike and I observed when he went to pick up beer on the way home from dinner. :cover:

LCBO = Liquor Control Board of Ontario... in case some of you were wondering. It;s a liquor store.
