Ok, so I will be ouside Sunday from about 9am until whenever...

I am installing a rebuilt ATX tranny with a 3L into Sami's freshly painted blue/grey Cougar... I just have to drop it back in, an bolt everything back up, fill fluids, and make sure everything is buttoned up before firing her up...

Anybody wants to come over and help, come over any time between 9:30am and 6pm... I could use some company :)

Well I went searching for the Dremel at my house. I asked my stepdad about it and I guess it hasn't been working . I tried to think up a couple other cool ideas but my stepdad wasn't home. I'll ask him in person in the next couple days to see what kind of other tools he has lying around.

From my past experience that's apparently a feature.

if i only had a normal left leg, i could drive a manual. oh well.

the tranny guy is trying to blame greg for everything. he is being very arrogant and does feel he is at fault. i'm gonna try to tell him tomorrow that its his fault and the info guide that i bought for the cd4e states that the only cause for this symptom is either a cracked torque converter or blown seal.

by the way, do you know how you can find a blown seal? just look for the seal witha smile on his face smoking a cig.

no way obviously. all we did was slide the torque converter onto the input shaft and then bolted the atx to the engine and finally the torque converter to the flexplate.

Yeah, his tranny guy is telling him that there is a 3/4" different between the old one from the other ATX, and the one that's in the ATX now...

Like if the T.C. was 5" thick, he is saying that the one in there now is 4.25" thick!!! There is NO WAY that could be... the T.C. never would have bolted up to the flexplate...

So frustrating to deal with this. I just want to know WHY its leaking, and not hear any blame game...

I don't know ... if it was shorter then wouldn't bolting it to the flexplate pull the torque converter to the flex plate if it is indeed shorter? therfor it wouldn't seal to the atx because it wasn't all the wya ingaged?

but I would assume that the TC was against the flex plate as if it wasn't you would have noticed that.

Of course it was flat... I never saw the TC move forward when mating the ATX to the motor. It was pushed in ALL THE WAY!

plus I have checked part numbers and all 3 years of Cougar factory manuals, and the only differences are between zetecs and duratecs... and I sure as hell have NEVER worked on a ZETEC ATX, so i wouldn't have the TC for a zetec lying around....

Not YET.

Seriously from an outsider's point of view, the mechanic sounds a bit shady. :(

Well, I just searched about 50 websites that sell torque converters for Cougars and contours, and i couldn't find any differences between 99-02 for duratecs...

Sami mentioned something in a message to me today that the mechanic showed him the 2 torque converters, but he didn't say what they looked like... I guess the guy has already rebuilt the ATX that I originally pulled out of the car, so hopefully it all goes back together properly, and he doesn't forget anything.

I always fix any dumb mistakes i may have made, but this I just can't see as being my mistake, no matter how many times I think about it, look for answers, etc... Its really bothering me! :banghead:

I'm right with you ... I can't see anything that syas you made the mistake either. the whole install couldn't be more straight forward then it was.

the two TC's he showed me were clearly different, but who's to say he just didn't grab some other torque converter and SAID it was the one greg put in. who knows? i know that i believe greg more than i believe him. but the bottom line is that i need a running car and he's rebuilding the one that was in the car and it should be done friday.....saturday at the latest.

You know, honestly, that's the EXACT same thing I said to a friend of mine at work tonight... and he agreed.

Thanks very much for believing me, Sami! seriously, I don't know how I would handle it if you were pissed at me or blamed me for the problem... I take my work very seriously, as I am sure most of you know by now.

I REALLY hope that the new rebuilt ATX won't give you ANY problems at all... you deserve to have at least 1 Cougar running, so you can enjoy it!!!

Also, I double-checked the Team Ford site, and it says there is a price difference between 99-00 and 01-02 Converters, but Neither one of us have ever used an ATX from a 01+ Cougar, so all 3 TCs I had are 99-00...

I guess I can't let this go until I know that the car is back up and running fine... I just want to make sure that the 3L is runnign good with the ATX in there.

Actually, since we did the wheel bearings and hammered the knuckles back on she hasn't leaked a drop and has held fluid now for 2 months...but the 3L is def way more enjoyable then the 2.5L....hands down
