so would anyone recommend a tranny flush on an ATX with 120k miles and no known previous flush done before the car was bought. We bought it at about 67k miles and have some records but not sure if it is all of them. Ive noticed i have a loud noise comming from the area of my transmission. ive heard that it can be bad with a tranny with so many miles so seeing what u think. here are some of the symptoms i experience

I can hear a loud winding noise (gets louder as i increase speed. On highway at 70+ with windows up the noise is insane). it occurs on and off

Sometimes i hear a crisp grinding/metal flaking noise. will quit if i let off the gas but return if im on the gas again.

Thanks for any input!

I did mine at about 118k miles and it only made it better. . . but that's just my case.

Although i did use what i believe is called "transtune"... in comes in a bottle that looks like seafoam, infact it is made by the same company that makes seafoam. I followed the instructions and flushed the tranny with clean fluid once, i then filled it up with clean fluid until the stick showed it was full.

well i think there is a difference between a flush and a drain. From what i understand there is a machine that literally cycles fresh fluid through to make sure all of the old fluid is out because the tranny fluid can oxidize and cause problems. but then again i consider myself a noob at most topics.

I have 112k now, and I'm not touching the fluid. Since I was broke as hell in college when I should have gotten it done.

why arnt u touching it?

and sry Vix i didnt mean to seem like a dick, i went and looked at the transtune and at first i thought it was like additive not an actual treatment/cleaner or atleast thats what they claim

if you havent done it for more than 80k,dont change it your gonna cause more problems it susposed to be done every 30k. atf is a hydrolic fluid and thickens over time and putting new fluid in can and will cause problems.

i wouldnt touch it unless youre convinced you have a serious tranny issue, because if you do, chances are its going to go anyway, so why not going down fighting? but chances are, if its never been done before with that many miles, it will make things worse. good luck.

I was getting slipping in my old car at around 110k (oddly enough), changed the fluid in an attempt to "fix" it. Third gear went out very shortly after. A top speed of like 35-40mph sucks, so does a $2000 rebuild bill.

yeah i get a slip in first gear every once in a while (maybe something like 1 per month) also a rough shift going into 5th/OD (also sometimes from 5th back into 4th) and this happens randomly. Also get a winding type noise comming from the area of the tranny, i assume it is the tranny because it increases/decreases with the RPM. Also, i sometimes get a another noise, sounds like a crisp metal shaving that occurs. The metal shaving noise will quit if i get off the gas but can return when im back on the throttle . so these are all concerns. but thanks, i have no record that its been changed and i prob should have done it when i got the car, but when your 16 you are concerned with other things.

How many miles ago did you buy the car? It was probably too late then even.

trans flush is a preventave maintenance, not a fix. once its too late, buy a new car.
