Went to take my backpack off and somehow it slid like a rock right off my arm and hit the floor face down from 3'. I have a Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM I got for X-mas and the kit lens that came with it.

Luckily the kit lens was on at the time and took the hit. It bent the focal ring in so it no longer focuses. Everything else works fine after a check. So since having only a telephoto lens makes the camera useless for pretty much everything else I had to bite the bullet and pick up a new mid-range for "cheap". Enter the Tamron 17-55 f/2.8 for the paltry sum of $420. :( It's pretty solid feeling and has some weight. Not a bad lens.

Just a sample picture:

I have the canon 17-85mm 4.5 IS (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=149&modelid=10511) and really like it. Next I purchase will probably be the 10-22mm 3.5 or 50mm 1.4 but until then, the one I have does a great job for not an overly costly lens. It does some cool wide angle things and also pretty good DOF for being a 4.5ef

the IS also does pretty well tracking moving stuff. (this pix was actually taken about 45 minutes after I bought the camera - so am sure I could do better now ;))

The Tamron 28-75/2.8 is a great lens too. I have it on my 20D 99.9% of the time.
