I Would Go With The Infinity Kappas. They Sound Terrific. As For The Amp, I'm Not Sure What Other Members Have Used, So Wait For Them To Chime In.

+1...Kappas are amazing speakers...and for those, i would stick with the infinity amps, they are great for mids and highs.
Actually, Kappas are not that great. Infinitys are known for their very "tinny" highs from their tweeter. If you want sound quality, go with a good quality components in 6.5 inch. Some reasonable speakers in that category would be Polk DB series, (cheap and sounds great) Polk/MOMO 6500 series (bit more but sound is AMAZING for the price. look on ebay and you can get a set for under 200 bucks). Another choice would be Infinity Perfects...tweeters on these are better for some reason...
These are the sets that im familiar with, having owned Kappas, Perfects and now Polk/MOMO... out of them, Polk is by far the best sounding speakers i owned, regardless of price. Ive read some reviews where guys think that thier Polk/MOMO sounds better than Focals and MB Quarts... that is saying something.
As far as Amp goes... for sound quality, i would go with Zapco, Elemental Design or (gasp!) Mcintosh.
Im seriously considering Macs but i have to save, save, save!
Good luck!

Keep in mind that 5x7s just aren't that good with bass. I love my middle-of-the-road 3-way Kenwoods for clarity, but they just don't do bass very well (I have Kenwood 6x9s and 6.5s in the Impala and they pump bass MUCH better with the very same head unit, so I conclude the problem is that the 5x7s just aren't as good). My opinion is that to do even moderate bass levels in a Cougar, you really need a subwoofer or you need to come up with a way to install 6x9s.

i had pioneer 2 ways in my focus with a alpine mrpf240 amp and they fit well with the system i had in the car. But in my cougar now i have pioneer 3 ways with same amp and dont like them as much as the 2 ways.

I just installed a new system.. I used JL TR's in the back and C5's in the doors powered by a 300/4 and it pounds pretty good when the sub is off..

they arent 5X7's but Ive heard that the phoenix gold RSD components are amazing for the price, they can be had for around 100 bucks and people on the audio forum I check periodically say that they compete with components in the $400 range. I plan on getting some for my fronts and an adaptor plate in the near future. They are still kicking around on some ebay stores.
EDIT-otherwise I have infinity reference 5X7's right now and they are very nice sounding, and are filled in nicely with the subs. the reference speakers are known to be less tingy as the kappa's cant handle as much power tho

That is total of around 400 dollars.
For 400 bucks, you got: One of the best sounding speakers on the market, one of the best amp money can buy and a nice little "boom" to balance out the components.
And i guarantee you, the SQ coming out of this setup will be impressive.

I heart diamond. i had the 3 way set up in my mustang.... 6", 4" tweet and the bi-amp set uo.
when i do my audio setup i will be going with diamond insides....i would even want to try and put diamond 8 or 10 in by the rear panels next to the seats and have no subs in the trunk...

you can wire a 2 channel amp to power 4 speakers, it just changes the impedence load going to the amp. I have a 2 ch rockford powering all 4 of my speakers with 50w rms each. by doing it this way it presents a 2 ohm load rather then a 4 ohm and I am not able to change the balance (left to right) of the speakers, but i still maintain the fade function the way that i have it wired.
but for the best sound a 4 channel amp is ideal for full adjustability.
