I'm getting embedded links in post that pop up a little banner when you scroll over it. Thought Plat/gold members had no adds.

Oh good, I thought I was just going insane last night when this started happening. Glad to see I'm no less sane than I was before. Which wasn't very sane anyways, but I digress.
So yeah, WTF, Trevor?

thank ****ing god... they were on my Safari(Mac) browser last night, and I figured "eh, maybe just a mac screwup" but they are on my Firefox(PC) browser too.
I loath those damn links...

none on my mac. has this been fixed already? hope so - because I can't stand those! IMO, those are 10x worse than the normal image banner ads.

nope... not fixed, in fact the last two words in your post ("banner ads") showed up as an embedded link for me :flushed:
edit: they seem random too... as soon as I made this post, I checked again, and now its gone... :confuzzed:
edit edit: ah! wtf! now its back!

still none here  :crossingfingers: are you using OSX 10.5.2 & Safari 3.1.1?
but I can't however click on my newly attacked image to embed it in my post  It instead takes me back to the main forum list (http://www.newcougar.org/forums/?stc=1). maybe that's normal after the latest updates - with the fancier popup image thing.

Browser says Firefox is 2.0.0.14 and is Safari 3.1 (OSX 10.4.11 :flushed::flushed:)
as for attacking those images... you have to sneak up on them quietly ;) :cover:

Sorry guys .. I forgot to use the exclusion tags for paying members when I set this up.
Edit: I just made the change ... the only time you should see them if you are a paying member is if you are logged out.

I remember another forum I was on that started using these,
just about ground the forum to a halt, as it nearly brought down the servers
I know here we have $$$$$ servers that should be able to handle it though.

Wow these things are really EFFING annoying. It horribly slows down the PC I'm currently using. I'm most certainly not a fan whatsoever of this crap. Just my $.02

you could up your $.02 to the paid membership and not have to worry about them ;)

I'm poor enough TY. I don't see any of this crap on CEG whatsoever...I'm kind of at a loss as to why NECO has to resort to spam ads? Literally, it's entirely spam.

If you don't like how the forums are run here, then don't keep coming back.
There's no need to compare this forum to another. They're run differently.
If everything was the same, there'd be no reason to have separate forums.

No need to lock this as I'm more than willing to address this issue. Do I REALLY NEED to point out the fact that it's an effing link that is double underlined and a different color than other links? Do I REALLY NEED to point out that there is no ad until YOU roll over the noticeably different link? Seriously ... do I?

I think people were complaining that it slows down the browsers even if you don't open them. Moreover, Yahoo has something similar in their stories (you can roll over certain items to get more information), and I find it pretty annoying, because I'll be reading an article and absently move the mouse cursor out of the way of the text, and accidentally roll over one of those damn things, which then pops up and blocks what I was reading. I don't know why Yahoo thinks automatic rollover pop-ups are a good idea - a click-to-popup would be a lot less annoying and still perform the same function. (Yahoo's is worse though because some of the links are not highlighted in any way - so you have no clue you're about to step on a mine.)

I'm sorry, but I browse the site both logged in and logged out side by side in two different browsers ALL the time to test this stuff out and I have noticed absolutely no performance degradation. If you where on dial-up, I could see your point, since it is all client-side and called at the end of the page (entire page loads first). However, the footprint of these adds really isn't anything to balk at. The only problem from a page performance standpoint is from the fact that the script and image calls is "remote" and you may be experiencing some latency from the adserver end. But again, I browse the boards in both modes and haven't noticed a difference.

I mean, I understand from a "business" perspective having those links, and I appreciate the testing you have done, but it does bog my browser down a lot on this computer. I use FF on a slightly older XP desktop (2.16gHz processor, 512MB RAM). The fact of the matter is it creates a sort of resource hog. I find that many times if I attempt to drag the scroll bar, it will freeze momentarily then catch up with me. I never had this problem before the links. Hopefully I can set up the wireless in my house so I can use my laptop, as my laptop would handle it no problem. And I'll probably also be looking to purchase a membership at some point soon. I'm just trying to speak up here for the people who don't have entirely up-to-date hardware. Sorry I came off as such a huge jerk (which I can be ;)), but I was having a bad day...

I have a gig of RAM on my work PC, and the site still loads slow as **** for me.
but I'm not complaining. I usually don't complain because I know I'll get the inevitable "sign up for a gold/plat account then!"

And when I'm over Trevor's house helping him babysit while we're doing rails off the back of a Saigon ***** we thank all of those little people who made it possible.
