OK, Can a Vortech type supercharger's output be turned to point in another direction?

meaning, the Vortech's output for the Cougar/Contour is normally pointing straight back at the firewall... Could it be rotated to point down towards the ground? and not have any issues?

There is a red "oil" line that is connected to the "snail" near the output, and it runs down to the main body of the supercharger. What effect would there be if the "snail" was rotated down to point at the ground, with consideration to that red line?

Thanks for any input. :)

The output can be rotated in any direction. There is a large clamp that needs to be loosened and then it will rotate freely. The red line going to the output is an air assist line to help pull oil up into the supercharger case. Only air runs through that line so you won't have any issues with rotating the output.

Awesome! Thanks very much Chris!

Now i know for sure how i'm going to run the intercooler piping!

(BTW, I will be using a Buick GN Intercooler with input/output on the same side)

Also, Chris have you (or anyone else) ever rebuilt one of the SC units with new seals and bearings?

I know where I can get a heavy duty kit for over 10 psi for the Vortech SC, and was wondering how easy it is to rebuild?

I haven't taken mine apart yet, but plan on beefing it up before i install the new Spider-Flex Couplers i bought to eliminate the splines on the jackshaft, maybe also install a keyway for them too...

I've never rebuilt one on my own. If I've ever had issues I've sent the head units back to vortech. They've always been under warranty whenever we've had an issue.

I figured that.... mine is a few years old, with less than 15,000 miles on it, and I am the second owner, so no warranty for me... ;)

I did just rip it all apart today, and the hardest part was getting the main shaft apart from the housing with the impeller on it... the impeller has a reversed thread on it, but then the shaft is pressed into the bearings, etc...

its all apart, and I'm glad I will be rebuilding it with heavy duty stuff! One of the bearing cages was plastic, and shattered with just a little bit of pressure put on it!!!

It'll be a month or 2 before I start playing around with the SC more, so I'll update when I start with it again...

I was under the impression that all the SQ units were heavy duty. The V9 that I use in our kits is SQ and I thought the original Vortech kit also used a V9 but it spun the opposite direction.

BTW Vortech seems to charge quite a bit for rebuilds. Even though we haven't been charged for anything they still send back a receipt to show what it would have cost if we paid for it. One head unit was leaking oil into the intake path because of a bad seal and it would have cost $900 for Vortech to fix it. I thought that was a little ridiculous.

I contacted superchargerrebuild.com and they said they had upgrade kits for $250.00 and it was fairly easy to tear down, so it should be incredibly easy to put back together...

I hate sending anything to anyone to be rebuilt, built, etc... i like to do ALL of my own work, no matter what it is...

My supercharger sits on the driver's side of the Cougar... same side as the intake. But, YES, the Maf and filter will be outside the engine bay in the front bumper's pocket in front of the driver's side wheel well. I have a Drift front bumper, and there is quite a bit of room for an intercooler, all of its piping, and a large Cone K&N filter/ 90mm MAF...

I might be able to work the MAF right in front of the SC unit, but we'll see.
This is something that should be completed by the end of July/August...

I have to finish bodywork and paint, interior, and 3L before I bother with the SC... just planning ahead. :)

Would be interested to know, if you use the mounting plates blackcoog made...whether you can turn the air exit downwards and site the filter outside, to retain the radiator pressure tank...G.

There is no way to retain the stock coolant tank with the supercharger on the pulley side of the engine no matter how you rotate the air exit.

OK..thanks for posting that....G.
